2000 was the first of two years I attempted Leadville. Like you, my spirits rose immeasurably once the rain started — it reminded me of home! I also remember trying to shift using the palm of my hands, and when I finished I was completely unable to take my helmet off; I couldn’t feel the clasp.My best memory of that race was tear-assing down the singletrack in the rain and cold, nearly blind behind my mud-spattered glasses, with brakes that barely worked. I think I rode that stretch with more skill than I’ve ever ridden any singletrack before or since.Have fun in Leadville! I can’t wait to read your write-up.

Just remember, I had my fastest LT100 time that year with a 9:50.You’ll be fine, just bring a lot of chain lube, and stop to put it on every 10+ miles durring the rain.S

Good luck. I think I found your site through Matt Chesters. I don’t know how I got so sucked into your Leadville race, but I hope you kill your sub-9 hour goal. I second the "carry a rain jacket and it won’t rain" setiment. I’ve only gotten wet once this summer in Denver.

My personal technique to guarantee rain is to NOT carry my rainjacket. After a long Summer including riding in Colorado in the afternoon (ALWAYs a thunderstorm) and a month of Arizona Monsoon weather, I have not been caught in the rain yet. Reason: rainjacket in the saddle bag! Now, however, I am doomed, since I said that…Also – personal standard of victory when climbing: Passing anyone who is 1) younger than me OR 2) who weighs less than me is a VICTORY. Everything else is at least a tie, except… occasionally I get passed by someone heavier (195) AND older (49) than me, which is a loss… I don’t care about descents or flat terrain.
