If you go to Site Admin -> Performance and enable max acceleration for guests then Gallery does page loads with only 1-2 mysql queries and has very low latency. We had some severe server issues when our build got attacked, a lot of it looks like DoS stuff. That might be the reason it was shut down. We switched to Coppermine (also free, also has an iphoto plug in) and that's been working well for us, though it's got some odd UI issues Gallery does not.
