Sounds like you got a lot of unexpected traffic without tuning Gallery for it. If you go to Site Admin -> Performance and enable max acceleration for guests then Gallery does page loads with only 1-2 mysql queries and has very low latency. You trade off some of the dynamic aspects of the application, but you can specify a time limit.

5,000 page views a day is not very much. Gallery2 can handle this just fine on most systems.

Some builds of Gallery are really prone to hacker attack. We had some severe server issues when our build got attacked, a lot of it looks like DoS stuff. That might be the reason it was shut down.

We switched to Coppermine (also free, also has an iphoto plug in) and that's been working well for us, though it's got some odd UI issues Gallery does not.

Our club's site is here, for comparison.

Using Flickr is proably a pretty good idea. What you need to do is sign up for an account (free) and then create a group. That will allow other members to post photos to the group.

Anyone wish to contribute would need a (free) Flickr account. They would then join your group and add their photo to the group.
