Tips or tricks to riding on snow? Hmm. Low tire pressure helps. 2.25" wide tires should be OK, but wider is better. The snow makes a huge difference - last year it was mostly walking, this year with hard-packed snow we mostly rode. It's important to pedal in circles and not mash the pedals to maintain traction. That's all I got.

Based on last year's post about this ride I decided to do my own NYD ride. It's been snowing like crazy here in the Roaring Fork Valley for a month, so I figured I test my snow biking chops. Turn's out that I don't have any snow biking chops. The ride I chose was an unimproved road that is normally just an access to great single track. It has only seen snowmobile and snowshoe traffic since the snows began. Snow biking was much harder than I anticipated. My 2.25" tires lost traction anytime the road was greater than a 2-3% grade. On the plus side, the scenery was beautiful, and the silence was only broken twice by gasps and subsequent sniggering of snowshoers as they watched me flail away. Snow biking hasn't caught on here in CO as it seems to have done in UT and Alaska.

I guess the obvious question is, did you guys hike-a-bike most of the way, or is there a secret to doing that that I missed (and doesn't require me to purchase a whole new bike - I know, sounds like a great excuse, but between work and skiing, one day of snow biking is probably it for the year)

My guess is Fatty will post his own entertaining report about the snow ride, but if you're anxious to see some photos and read my rather bland description:

It pains me to see the utah county mountains. I've moved away to Oregon, and love the riding out here, but I will always miss all those rides that were 10 minutes from my doorstep. Have a good time.

Fatty,

I will be leading my 18th annual "Heal That Hangover Ride" here in Youngstown, OH. And my fellow club members, who I've introduced to your blog have begged me to please make it clear that "clothing is MANDATORY on my ride". Happy New Year!!!
