@Marey -- ahh...someone who lives in my neck of the woods. For some reason, I think King's Mtn is easier than Old La Honda. However OLH is more protected than KM, so it all depends. :-)

@Gabi -- LOVE the Sharkie picture. GO SHARKS!

I know what you mean about the burrito, food has never tasted as good as after a hard ride...

I hope you go back and get to the top of that climb, remember training is like wrestling a bear, you don't stop when you're tired, but when the bear is.

A change of subject if I may: Check the Velonews story about HardestMan/Woman Competition.
http://velonews.competitor.com/2011/10/news/it’s-a-jens-off-who-has-the-hardest-hard-man-photo_195791

There must be a photo out there of Fatty that can be submitted.

or if we could coax him into it...he could recreate that 'famous' Bob Roll pose

Another great blog. Personally, I think your coaches were jerks. I don't understand that mentality. I'm glad that you are no longer subjected to that. They would have gotten more out of you had they trained you properly on the bike first. Sheesh. And I love the two teammates who came back to help you! That is so awesome!

I HATE climbing and I HATE hills. However, after getting my cyclocross bike with it's compact crankset, I don't dread them quite as much AND I have the traditional double chainring, not the triple like I have on my roadie. I can climb pretty well on the cross. I still hate hills, but nothing in Alaska is flat so I've come to accept that hills are going to have to be part of my repertoire that I improve upon.

I'm happy to hear you are falling in love with biking again. Having the right bike and gearing can make a world of difference! Allez!

...wait, you actually lived here in No. Cal and never rode up King's Mnt Road? Try Rails to Trails past the Echo Reservoir and then head up the old road alongside I80 to Evanston...the old I80. Great ride and not too steep...I used to live in Echo and got transplanted to the Bay Area...GO SHARKS!

Very awesome, Gabi. I think this was extra interesting to me because I know those climbs. Keep at it, Gabi. Climbing can be lovable, I promise!

Gabi. I think AngieG has a good idea. Take that bike in and get some gears. Even Fatty has abandoned the single speed esthetic.

Very well written post. Reminds me of running my first 5K and thinking I was not going to make it to the finish line. I hated it the whole time- but I was so excited when I did finish. You will conquer that ride one day but more importantly you are riding because you enjoy. I grew to love running too.
