I made a sweet and a savory version of these. I thought using regular bacon would be a problem because of the fat so I used Canadian bacon instead. The sweet ones I did with dried fruit and frosted them with a fair-trad version of Nutella (this one was total rocket fuel).

Also, I cooked the rice and let it cool, then I poured raw, beaten eggs and the rest of the stuff into the rice and baked it in a brownie pan. It's more work than Dr. Lim's method but I like the way they turned out.

I can vouch for AK Chick, indeed, she is not crazy. Only partially crazy, and only some of the time, maybe. Or not.

And as an Alaskan native (but not a native Alaskan - figure that out), I'll agree, it's a beautiful place.

I just got the book the other day and it looks great. Gotta make sure you are active though or you could pack on the pounds, especially as it is winter and in many places people are taking a bit of time off!

LOVE the guest posts! They are awesome!

I am someone who possesses the most delicate digestive system EVER. It took some trial and error to get my nutrition dialed in and for the most part, it doesn't involve any food as it causes too much intestinal upset. I agree that sports drinks have too much sugar. All of them, except for FRS, upset my stomach and make me nauseous. I don't like gels or sports bars. I really like the Jelly Belly sportbeans and the Luna Moons. What works best for me is Hammer Perpeteum (thinking they should start paying me to represent them) because it is very low in sugar and includes protein. It is nothing short of amazing. As long as I drink it as specified in the instructions AND also consume water from an alternate source, I have steady energy and I'm never hungry. It worked fantastic in the 90+ degree heat down in Austin. It worked fantastic in the 40-50 degree nonheat for the 110 mile MS ride in Alaska. The stuff is just incredible. For me. I can tolerate bananas and oranges fairly well so will supplement with those if available. I don't normally like bagels as they are too dry. I also used electrolyte tabs down in Austin and never had cramps. I was religious about drinking too which is something I don't have to worry about as much in Alaska. It just doesn't get that hot in the areas I ride (Southcentral - Anchorage and vicinity).

Anyway, I plan to experiment with the rice cakes and find a subsitute for bacon (uck). I'm just not a big bacon person.

Wow, that is a really long post. I need to get an editor!

PS Received my personalized autographed copy of the book last night. If you TRULY ever want to visit, you can contact me (Captain Steve, Tim, Tracy, Pam, and a couple other folks can vouch that I'm not a crazy person), and I'd love to help you, Hammer, the kids, etc. find a good place to stay and make recommendations on what to see and do while you are here. We have a few mtb races that are truly epic and a run on a trail where you get to see glaciers, probably an assortment of wildlife including moose and bears (black and/or brown), tangle with a nasty little plant that can cause a burn if your skin is exposed to sun after you brush against it, ford a glacial fed stream that may be low or could be thigh high, possibly get lost, and have a lot of fun. You have to qualify to run it but that would be no problem for you and the Hammer. I'm totally serious. Just let me know if you two ever get time to come visit. You will not regret it. This is one of the most incredibly beautiful places on earth.

@Ian 5:57: You funny. I was thinking of something about Radio Shack providing their riders with personal robot valets, but yours was way better. TJ
