I really enjoyed your story Lisa....wow, I just can't imagine doing that ride. The part of your morning preparations and how you were planning made me nervous for you. Glad you had a great race!!

GregC-I almost lost my iPhone from a velcro closed bento box (I had to ride back 1.5 miles praying no one would see it and grab it - they didn't). Hmmm, methinks I need to borrow my mother-in-law's sewing machine and start making zippered bento boxes. I'm going to modify my bento box - no more velcro!

Lisa, congrats on the great race and really well written report. I'm glad to see Elden is not hogging all the writing talent in the family.

About men's response to being "chicked" and the freeloading, ugh. I do not race or do large group rides, but I commute every day on a popular cycling route. I'm no Hammer, but I, too, have grown impatient and dropped the hammer. One of the frustrations of being a female cyclist, I guess.

Congrats again. Can't wait to hear about Breckenridge.

Awesome rides! I had the same problem IT Guy and Hammer had with my Bento box popping open during a ride and losing the contents (food and cell phone). I solved this by removing the Velcro and replacing it with a big wide zipper (and in true MacGyver fashion, accomplished this with the use of a heavy duty office stapler). Problem solved- zipper is easy to open and close while riding, and no more unintended Bento box openings.

Oops, just realized I posted my hotmail email address instead of just my user name. DOH! If you have time and are able, you can reach me at the hotmail email or the other one that isn't published. I check them both, but use the hotmail one more.

Yay! Thank you, thank you, thank you Hammer for sharing! I LOVED reading about your race. I love your thought process as you race. I know these aren't easy for you to write, which makes them that much sweeter to read. Thank you!

Elden - if you happen to read the comments, I would really appreciate some advice if you have the time to send me some via email. A very dear coworker and friend's father just entered hospice. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer a couple months before the Davis ride. I knew what that meant - my aunt had the worst kind of lung cancer - small cell, but they caught it early by a fluke and she survived. Most people don't. He is on oxygen 24 hours a day and the cancer is now in his spine and lower back. I know that it won't be much longer now before he runs out of time in his battle. I would love some advice from you on what I can do and say that will bring my friend and her family comfort between now and when he passes on. I so wish you had that book written, but I know it's coming and it's going to help so many people. Anyway, her email is a reminder of why LIVESTRONG is so important (I've contacted them too). I'd appreciate any advice you can give very much. I'm so devastated for her. I really freaking hate cancer. I'm so mad and sad and frustrated.

My problem with making a "decision" is that the gun goes off, then I go off. Regardless of the decision. :)

Awesome ride BTW.
