I drove the road on 4/17 while riding ou the rain/snow in moab. I have never been so happy to have "Hill decent control" as I tiptoed down the Shaffer road. Definately a humbling moment as my rear end would slide out a few inches.

Anyway I think you can thank the park service for the stellar conditions. They were out there with a grader and front end loader maintianing the entire road. they had just graded the switchbacks down the day/days before.

Next year my buddy and I are headed down to ride it.

Cheers

This is excellent...I don't even have to blog about our recent #WRIAD trip which was also Saturday ...you did it for me. Only difference is we started at 6:15am, and rode in the rain for 3 hours...but same end result (oh and we went up Schafer which I don't recommend!). The huge bonus is we did not have to walk in sand ONCE...just need to find the positives! I think I remember passing you guys early in the afternoon. ;-)

I feel your pain. A group of us were at the top of the Kokopelli trail on Saturday morning surrounded by fresh snow and 31 degree temps. We almost bagged it and went back to Moab but decided to stick it out and were rewarded with a truly epic ride down Porcupine Rim. There were several moments during the initial ride where I questioned my sanity. Too bad I didn't know you where in town, I would have offered to buy you some pie :).

Wow! I always look forward to the RAWROD Reports and what creative spin you apply to this year's challenge. No 'flower' this year(what happened to that poor fella?) and it sound like no Brats.

If you decide to go for SPEED next year give a shout out! I'm confident that several of us would make the journey to be your Sherpa (ok, maybe just me, but I can sure sherp a shovelful) your personal 'waterboy'.

And I love the fact that you make a 50mi Shiv ride your recovery ride on Sunday.

Honestly, had we not met up with you in the visitors center and talked about at least trying Shafers; we probably would have bailed. So glad we didn't. It ended up being a really good day.

I am fascinated by the seemingly random pendulum swing around commenting activity on this blog. I was expecting today's post to get a ton of comments, but not so far. Everyone on vacation? Bueller?

Here in Oregon (you know, that awesome place where you took a little bike ride last fall?), I often go out in rain and hail. I tell myself I'll give it a couple of miles and if it's really miserable, that's still close enough to walk home. I once left my house when it was hailing and 30 degrees at my house (wearing a ton of layers) and rode the rest of the ride in 55 degree weather (I was really hot)!

It's some sort of a gremlin!
