The two most useful (daily, in fact) pieces of cycling advice I've gotten have come from The Hammer. 1: You're going to be exhausted at the end of a tough ride whether you go hard or not, so go hard! 2: Lead a turn with your belly button. Both tips really work, and The Hammer continues to inspire!

Thanks Reba and The Hammer! Leading w/ the belly button works great for me! I took a turn at 40mph this AM on the road bike flawlessly! In the past I've always had to brake to feel safe in that corner.

The Hammer and I have both been talking about what a simple change this is, and what a huge different it makes. How did we not know about this before? - FC

Very nice article and it is very nice to see Jeff Elison and my book Vertical Mind put to use in other sports (not rock climbing). Thanks for mentioning it!

@Jeff we could use a thermal imaging camera. I think Fatty is friends with a woman who is a fireman in Idaho. She probably has access to one.

Actually that would be quite an interesting "race".

Recently, Specialized did some wind tunnel testing showing the time trial aero benefits of leg shaving (my favorite part was their Wookie scale for amount of leg hair). Perhaps they have also examined mass versus aero tradeoffs while descending? My bet: more mass outweighs any resulting lack of aero. But, since we're already overthinking this, I'm all for adding different weight class categories.

@Jeff - some of us have, um, a little problem with going downhill. As in we perhaps might have a bit more to "hold back", i.e. flab, that puts us at a sore disadvantage. I'm sure one of the engineering-types here could make us a sliding scale of total weight/max allowed temperature. You know, to make everything "fair".
