In fact, I am very scared of the passport 2 pain ride on Vashon (82 miles, 10K of elevation, 13% common, some 20%+), not because I have done poorly on it, but because I did very well on it the time I rode it, and I am terrified that it was a "great legs" fluke. Agree that 90% of cycling is in your head...the other 75% is somewhere else that I haven't quite been able to put a finger on. All I know for sure is that when even the teensiest whisper of a thought that "you are not going to make it" creeps into your head, you are done. No need to struggle further, your brain has given up.
