I did my entire 100 miles on a recumbent on rollers. It took me a long ass time, so I think that makes me second in the indoor-recumbent category. NEXT YEAR I'll take top on the podium. ;)

Great write-up!

As bad as upright stationary bikes are, I find the recumbent style machines to be even less comfortable. Plus, there's all that prep time needed to grow the requisite beard.

Easy way to divert attention from the man-bag. Simply show up in full cycling gear (helmet and shades a must, arm and knee warmers optional (of course)). You show up with your helmet on, and take the occasional corner with a good lean and look where you're intending to go, people may even start offering to carry that musette for you. Just saying...

BykJunkie - thanks for the lift! I floated around on the Gator navy quite a bit in the 80's on LST's and LSD's in the Pacific and South Atlantic. The Navy ate a lot better than we did and there was hardly ever any sand or mud so out time on board was always appreciated.

David - a La Ruta report does exist. I'll shoot it to The Fat Man and see if he thinks it is worthy

Corrine - after riding for miles on the railroad tracks in Costa Rica, anything is more comfortable

Thanks for all the feedback!

Great story. I'd love to read a race report on La Ruta! Any chance for a guest blog series, Fatty?

Oh, I would ABSOLUTELY host a guest multiparter on La Ruta. - FC

Awesome 100 HMON report John! And the La Ruta! Envious.
As a friend of fatty, you were never alone!
And as one of the guys mentioned in the " aircraft carrier" to set the story straight, we were on an LHD ( smaller than an aircraft carrier but built for our Marine Corps aircraft) You loved the suffering in the gym just like we did. Your storie is motivating!!!

Great race report!!! I'm wondering how your nether regions felt after 6 hours on gym bikes (although I guess more than half was on a recumbant). I do NOT find them comfortable and avoid them at all costs. I think you definitely win the division of Loneliest 100 MoN While Surrounded By People. I can't believe nobody talked to you. I think I might have shed a tear reading that. Sounds awful. You can be proud of your accomplishment! Now the Costa Rica race, that sounds awesome and terrible all at the same time! Looks more technical than I can handle, though.

Remind me to continue doing my 100MoN outside. As boring as my routes are, there's nothing worse than sitting in a gym for hours on end.

Kudos John!

Great story John and great accomplishment with La Ruta! I don't think anyone can give you a hard time about carrying a purse. All the climbing during La Ruta earned you the honor of carrying what ever you want! Wear it proudly! And congrats on your 100 MoN, you are a beast!
