Fight Cancer, Win a 29″ Singlespeed Townie / MTB
I have never raced the Frozen Hog — an early February mountain bike race close to where I live. It’s too cold. I’m out of shape. Any other excuse I can think of.
This year, though, it looks like I have no choice. Why? Because UtahMountainBiking.com and Racer’s Cycle Service are doing something so cool I’d have to be the ultimate jerk to miss it.
They’re raffling off two Marin Hamilton 29′ers (a 29″ singlespeed MTB that can be built up as a mountain bike or a townie), with the money from one going to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and the money from the other going to the Huntsman Cancer Institute. In both cases, they’re donating in honor of Susan.
One for Locals
If you live in Utah, you should seriously consider registering for the race. When you register online, you’ll have a chance to buy a raffle ticket for $10.00. All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Huntsman Cancer Institute, which did an incredible job of taking care of Susan during her recent hip replacement.
By the way, if you wear your pink Fat Cyclist jersey to the race, you get a free second raffle ticket. How’s that for cool?
One for Fat Cyclist Readers
Of course, most of you don’t live anywhere near me, but that doesn’t mean you can’t win one of these bikes. To “buy” a raffle ticket for the second Hamilton 29er, just make a $10 donation to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, then forward me the email confirmation you get. If you donate multiples of $10, I will count that as multiple tickets.
Now, UtahMountainBiking.com and Racer are being generous by donating these bikes, but they don’t have an infinite amount of money. So they’re willing to ship the bike anywhere in the US, but can’t afford the shipping cost and customs of shipping outside the US. So while anyone in the world can buy a raffle ticket, if you live outside the US you’re going to have to come pick the bike up yourself (or have it sent to a stateside friend).
When’s the Drawing?
The Frozen Hog is Saturday, February 2. That’s when they’ll do the drawing for both the bikes.
The winners can then specify what size they want, and Racer will send it out to them.
I’m pretty sure I just heard a bunch of sighs of relief that it’s not up to me to send out the bikes to the winners, since that would mean you wouldn’t be getting them until sometime in 2009.

You know that Susan’s fighting cancer, but I don’t know if I’ve told you that my paternal grandmother, my sister Kellene, my father, my stepmother, and my stepfather have all had cancer.
And today, I just got an email from a reader of this blog — someone who sent a very nice gift to Susan a while back — saying she’s just been diagnosed with breast cancer. It hit me hard.
The fact is, everyone knows someone who has or will have cancer. It’s the meanest equal-opportunity disease out there.
So I appreciate they way all of you understand how I’m going to be doing a lot of contests and talking a lot about cancer this year.
So again: thanks for your help.
PS: I’ve gotten close to $1000 in bets against me riding 100 miles on my rollers this weekend. Thanks!

Dude, with a name like “Frozen Hog” how can the Fat Cyclist *not* to ride? Are you waiting for a “Frozen Clydesdale” race? I say this with love and admiration for your eating *and* racing skills.

Woo, hoo! *Or should I say Huzzah!? That is too cool for school, Fatty! I have to say I can’t possibly catch up to you there. Good luck on the 100 miles to nowhere, and on the raffle, and the Frozen Hog! By the way, you are right, EVERYONE has someone close to them who has had or knows someone who has had a fight with cancer. It sucks more than anything.

Cool thing. I’m not a mtb racer, but I might just have to check out the Hog this year.
Also, I’m doing 100 miles indoors, too. But I won’t be on rollers. Instead, I’ll be at the gym on a Jonny G special staring at a cinder block wall.

we learned in class last semester that the lifetime probabilty of getting cancer (any type) is 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women… yep, that was a fun day.
I hope that Susan and your family are doing well! Go for the Hog, FC!!

The Frozen Hog race looks like a lot of fun !
Good luck with the 100 mile ride on the rollers. A friend of mine ran 100k on a treadmill outside a shopping centre last year to race money for Oxfam. He is definitely a freakish athlete.

Yup we all know some-one directly or indirectly… for me my mom, my grandfather, my husbands aunt, my sisters godmother, my godmother and my cousins mom-in-law.

One of the coolest things I’ve heard lately. Very nice. If I was closer I’d be in, but the hike from Baltimore (and the fact that I don’t have an MTB right now) is a little bit of a problem.

Yes, indeed, cancer just plain sucks. My family tally so far: wife (breast at age 37), mother (breast), father (bladder) and father-in-law (lymphoma). You’re absolutely right: it’s the meanest equal-opportunity disease out there. My wife had none of the major risk factors (eats healthy, has always stayed in shape, no genetic factors, non-smoker, etc) yet she still got a quite aggressive form of it, which just proves how little is really known about it.
I know most, if not all, of your readers don’t mind if you talk about cancer more in 2008. Awareness and advocacy can only help the battle, and it is definitely a battle.

Best of luck on not chafing this evening. You’ll want to stay unchafed in the nethers, so you can concentrate on the Deadwood language chafing your ears!

Good job Fatty! This is a worthy cause. My 23 year old son is also fighting cancer right now and he is being treated at the Huntsman Cancer Clinic in American Fork. They are awesome! I am an ‘Officiator’ for the Hog and have done so for years now so I will be there. By the way, I think I ran into you on Ridge Trail 157 this past fall. Keep on riding and let’s get this cancer thing whipped. Cancer sucks!

My godmother, one of the most important people I’ve ever been lucky enough to have in my life, died a few years after having really radical surgery to deal with breast cancer. I miss her every day, and can’t tell you how much I wish you guys well in dealing with the struggles you are dealing with… we are with you in whatever way we know how to be.
