This One’s For Me, Part I

06.2.2010 | 8:42 am

You know how Gary Fisher gave away a Superfly in Fat Cyclist colors as part of the contest I did with Johan Bruyneel last December? AKA the “FattyFly?” Well, there’s a little piece of the story I haven’t been telling you about. It started when I saw the photo (click for a larger version) for this bike:

201006020803.jpg

I wanted one. So. Bad.

But I wanted something a little different. And so I used my most extraordinary and useful superpower — asking people for stuff — in a rare and ethically complex way: I started asking if they could make me a Superfly SS, in Fat Cyclist colors.

A FattyFly SS.

And, well, take a look at the photos Travis Ott sent me yesterday (click for larger versions). Here’s a shot from the front:

201006020825.jpg

And here’s one from the top:

201006020809.jpg

It’s shipping today. It should arrive sometime next week, at which point there will be a “This One’s For Me, Part II” post.

I already own most of the components for this bike; they’ll be transferred over from my old Superfly SS (for those of you about to ask, I already sold the frame to a friend). With a couple changes, naturally. I smell a sub-18-pound bike in my very near future.

There will be no fundraiser. There will be no giveaway.

This will be the world’s one and only FattyFly SS. And it is mine.

PS: Full disclosure: I paid for this frame, but below retail.

The publicity you have given this brand deserves a “Mrs Fatty bike”!
Could start a trend in “Mr & Mrs bikes”with good results for the makers.I am sure your readers will agree!

It’s difficult enough trying to get a fatty jersey ( when is the next order open ?),
I can’t even imagine trying to convince Gary Fisher to produce more of the FattyFly line. NICE (wiping the drool off my keyboard)!

  12. Comment by gian | 06.2.2010 | 9:39 am

Soo jealous. That this is awesome. I have a fisher 29er and love the way it rides. Very nice man, very nice.

Hey Fatty, I actually have a question about singlespeeds – should I get one? I’m a university student, and need a new bike, since my current bike is (literally) older than I am, and on it’s last legs. I’ve pretty much fallen in love with a singlespeed I found at MEC (Canadian store, I think it’s similar to REI), but I’m not sure whether it’s the right bike to buy. I’ll be using it for my commute to work (about 9km), and for biking around
town, etc. Any advice? I’ve been reading your blog for ages, and figured thus was
    the place to ask.

Wicked-cool! Tho I’d be more inclined to have gears personally…you SS guys amaze me.

  21. Comment by Constantin | 06.2.2010 | 10:42 am

Niiice! Do they take requests like that on a regular basis?

  22. Comment by Mike | 06.2.2010 | 10:48 am

    Beautiful.

On a mostly unrelated note, I just joined Team Fatty for the Seattle Challenge. Is there any opportunity to meet up with others on the team before the ride?

  23. Comment by Clydesteve | 06.2.2010 | 10:53 am

Fatty, it is touching to me that you would publish pictures of a bike frame in Oregon State colors just a day after the Oregon State Beavers baseball team is selected for the national playoffs. Thanks for that.

    Go Beavs!!

  24. Comment by Donna | 06.2.2010 | 10:54 am

I drool at your feet……wow…..crazy sezy bike Mr. Natty Fatty……. :)

  25. Comment by Clydesteve | 06.2.2010 | 11:00 am

Mike – funny you should ask about meeting up with Team Fatty prior to the ride. At this very moment, Matt Kreger, Team Fatty Seattle teammate and winner of a nice bike in a Fat cyclist drawing year before last, is devising a poll whereby members of Team Fatty Seattle will be able to express what sort of get together we should have.

In any case we are planning to do something. If you are a member of Team Fatty Seattle and have wishes one way or the other, email me (I am the Team Co-Capt, btw, Mike) at spete @ proaxis.com and I will forward your thoughts to Matt who is helping organize.

Also, I am looking for a cook (assuming we eat) & man/woman in charge for the Team fatty get-together. Matt will be doing the Tour de Blast on Saturday June 19th, which is when we want to get together.

Also, Mike, the very best way to meet some of the team, including I assume Fatty & the Runner is to qualify for the Appreciation Dinner at the Seattle LSC on the evening of June 19th. You need to raise $3000 to qualify.

  26. Comment by Di | 06.2.2010 | 11:08 am

Sub-18 pounds?? Wow. I think that will put your bike at about 10 lbs less than mine. Wow. I think that is lighter than my cyclocross bike! Enjoy. Everyone deserves a new bike. :-D

  27. Comment by chtrich | 06.2.2010 | 11:20 am

    I seconded Jay’s question.

  28. Comment by Slowerthanyou | 06.2.2010 | 11:27 am

    Hey Fatty,

You know how twin six makes clothes that say fat cyclist on them, and then we all buy them, and race in them, and feel great because we are helping to fight cancer and also getting a great product?

Well you should talk to Gary F. about doing something similar with the SS. Obviously it wouldn’t be exactly like yours because yours is a one and only. It could be in the colors with a clydesdale though. We could buy them get a great bike and fight cancer all at once. Anyone with me on this?

  29. Comment by AngieG | 06.2.2010 | 11:33 am

Congrats you very much deserve this!! and I agree, Mrs F deserves one too.

  30. Comment by Tim | 06.2.2010 | 11:37 am

    I third Jay’s question…or is it second chtrich’s question….

  31. Comment by Mike Roadie | 06.2.2010 | 12:08 pm

I think there also needs to be a “Mike’s Bike”!

Enjoy it…..and share lots of pics!

Congrats on the new bike – I think a lot of us here know what that feels like!

Adventuring Cycling Magazine’s weekly BikeBits has a link to Extanz’s “fifty of the most influential cycling blogs.” Fat Cyclist is number 2 (just behind BikeSnobNYC). Congratulations, Elden – this just confirms your status as a well loved blogging Ironman, single speed superstud.

Don’t forget to keep working on the book. I just finished BikeSnob’s and it was great, but I know yours is going to be awesome. Enjoy the new bike, but I still want to get you and The Runner on a tandem for Leadville. There were five teams last year …

    One word…awesome!

  42. Comment by Wheels | 06.2.2010 | 4:22 pm

It was hard for me to see a bike as I tried to figure out how that finger could both point and fold into the palm at the same time. Creepy. But yeah, once I figured it out I noticed a pretty sweet FattyFly. Good work.

  43. Comment by KanyonKris | 06.2.2010 | 4:28 pm

Stone cold sexy, but it’s going to weigh over 20 pounds. We bribed Travis to use lead paint.

  44. Comment by Alyson | 06.2.2010 | 5:14 pm

You deserve it Fatty ~ DO NOT GIVE IT AWAY!!! Your dedication to fighting cancer & this blog are inspirational. Keep up the good & funny work!:-)
Oh, and I second Pedalpink re: your book!

  45. Comment by Wendy | 06.2.2010 | 8:04 pm

I am curious…what made you chose your Fat Cylist symbol that you use on all your merchandise? It is very unique and very easily identifiable, just wondering if there is meaning behind it?

  46. Comment by ChefJT | 06.2.2010 | 10:13 pm

Bully for you. You’ve done much, helped many, and deserve to enjoy a little schwagg. I for one wouldn’t care if you had received it gratis. Bought my first MTB in December (Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo) and love it. Still can’t believe I waited until I was 50 to go off-road.

  47. Comment by AK Chick | 06.2.2010 | 11:38 pm

    Love it! :)

  48. Comment by Down South | 06.3.2010 | 12:52 am

If you look closely at the first picture of your new frame, it looks like there are only 4 fingers on that hand… the index is coming out of the middle finger like they’re conjoined. Weird. Sweet bike though. I’d totally get one. But in pink. Like “Mr. and Mrs.” bike said.

  49. Comment by bikesgonewild | 06.3.2010 | 3:27 am

    …definitely nice…

…can i borrow it on halloween if i wear my fatcyclist jersey ???…

    …just askin’…

  50. Comment by bikesgonewild | 06.3.2010 | 3:58 am

…here’s an ironic tidbit for ya, fatty, for when you’re out riding your new custom painted superfly…

…that “other” headtube sticker besides your “clydesdale” logo, the G2 ???…stands for genesis 2, right ???…

…when i worked for g-fish before the trek thingy, we were a 30 person company & we had a young mechanic working w/ us also named gary…

…to distinguish between the two gary’s for intercom or phone usage, that sorta thing, the mechanic became, that’s right, G2…

…the kid shpould be gettin’ residuals…

    …just sayin’…

Sweet looking ride! And I agree with everyone that said you deserve it. You’ve given so much away to everyone else, you deserve to have a sweet sub 18 lb SS!

  52. Comment by Russell | 06.3.2010 | 8:30 am

    You lucky, lucky bastard!

  53. Comment by Clancy | 06.3.2010 | 9:14 am

Very sweet ride, awesome paint. Just a shame you’re gonna ride it hard and scratch it. :)

And I wanna know when twin six will have more jersey’s – I need a fatty jersey!!!

  54. Comment by Neel Disciple | 06.3.2010 | 9:51 am

What is “full retail” for this frame…or rather, or also(!), what is “full retail” for a one off custom painted frame of this type from Fisher?
    Just askin’

  55. Comment by Dan in Sac | 06.3.2010 | 9:53 am

Dang! I thought you were going to say they producing a limited amount of Fattyfli and this is our chance to order. Well….. enjoy…..

  56. Comment by eclecticdeb | 06.3.2010 | 11:12 am

@Wendy…the symbol is a Clysedale, which is a typical category given to a “hefty” athlete in an organized race.

  57. Comment by Arjan | 06.3.2010 | 11:30 am

I am with Clancy. I also need a Fatty Jersey.
Nice Frame though. Personally I do not think I could do the SS thing right now but a sub 18 bike could possibly persuade me.

[...] It’s just a bike. I know that. And I know that, eventually, I will put it in the garage with the other bikes. I will ride it without a second thought, without even considering how it looks. Eventually, I will let it get dirtier and dirtier, until I have to clean it more out of necessity — i.e., the wheels no longer turn and the bike is carrying an extra seven pounds of dirt — than out of a need to make it look new. [...]
