Cooler than Fonzie

09.20.2007 | 6:08 am

I do not like Las Vegas. It’s too hot. It’s too crowded. It’s too creepy. The entertainment doesn’t entertain me. At all.

I used to have to go, once a year, for Comdex. While pretty much every other tech nerd I knew counted the days ’til they got to go to this weeklong software orgy, I would look for excuses to stay home.

Examples of contemplated excuses follow:

  • “I think I’ve been poisoned.”
  • “My goiter is acting up.”
  • “I had a vivid dream that the Armageddon starts this week, and it begins in Las Vegas.”

None of these excuses were successful, and I always wound up going.

What irony, then, that for Interbike — the one show I’d actually be excited to go to, even though it’s in Las Vegas — I actually have a genuine ironclad reason for not going: It’s end of quarter, and I am buried neck-deep in a project that actually affects the future of my company.

Oh well, maybe next year.

Unbelievably Cool
Of course, all the bike and bike accessory companies are rolling out their wares for ‘08 at Interbike. Which means my favorite companies have got some cool new stuff to show.

In particular, Twin Six has some new jerseys coming out that I absolutely must have. First, there’s the Speedy ‘08:

I really, really dig the retro, home-made look of the jersey, where the stripes, the lettering and the “6″ have the color of the jersey show through, like the silk screen was running out of … um … whatever stuff they use to silk screen onto shirts.

The other jersey out of their ‘08 collection I am absolutely going to add to my collection is The Cross:

This jersey makes me think that the next Fat Cyclist jersey — should I decide to do one — will be black and red.

Rewarding Awesomeness
Twin Six has more cool new jerseys and T-shirts coming out for ‘08. You should go to their site and check them out.

And then, you should consider this: Twin Six is not a huge multinational company. They just seem that way because they keep doing everything right. They’re actually just two guys in Minneapolis, doing their part to make cyclists everywhere look cooler than we actually are.

So here’s what I want you to do. Go visit your local bike shop and talk to the guy there who’s going to Interbike. Tell him you would really like to be able to start buying cool jerseys from his shop, and that he ought to make sure he takes the time to swing by the Twin Six booth and talk with your good buddies Brent and Ryan (yeah, you’re on a first name basis with them). Tell him to tell Ryan and Brent that Fatty sent him.

And then you can feel good about yourself for the rest of the day, knowing you’ve done your part to rid the world of cringe-inducinggoofy novelty jerseys forever.

PS: Speaking of jerseys, the original Fat Cyclist Jerseys are now officially all sold out. If you didn’t get one, you don’t get one. there are only four three of the original orange-and-black Fat Cyclist Jerseys left for sale in the whole world:

They’re all size LargeTwo of them are size Large, and one is Medium, they’re ready to ship, shipping’s free, and when they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

Click here to order one (Twin Six is out, so you’ll have to order from me). First come, first served. I don’t expect these to last through the day, so if you take some time to contemplate, you’ll probably miss out.

You can still get the pink WIN edition (Unisex sizes only — women-specific sizes are all sold out) from Twin Six. Stock’s starting to run low in some sizes, though; if you want one, you should get one.

    SO cool. The new shirts are really cool also. I must add them to my collection so I can go two weeks without wearing the same twin six shirt twice.

    Rode with some of the Team Twin Six for a little while during the Dakota 50. They have a pretty cool write up on a race you should all considering doing sometime:

    Egads! Those Primal Wear jerseys are downright frightening! Do people actually wear those?

    However, I did find one of them that reminds me of certain somebody… who could it be?

    Fatty, I am surprised that you dont own one of the primalwears “climbs like a goat” jersey. Seeing that you do climb like a goat and have a passion to eat them ;-)

    This is to report that one of your “Original” Fat Cyclist Jerseys made it to the top in the Mt. Locke mountain climb, in West Texas, follow the link:

    I’m thinking that Primal Wear is going to be really happy about the click through rate from your blog…until they actually read your post. lol Although they might make some gag/white elephant gift sales. Those jerseys are hideous! Reminds me A LOT of those piano neckties that people give their dads on father’s day.

    Fatty:

    Can we do the “el paso” on the Black jersey…..way too hot in the sun!

    Look for my teammates from Polar at Interbike. I think they are demo-ing the new CS800 system with power meter.

    P.S. We still need help with the collections in Support of Susan and other for the LiveStrong Challenge and Ride for the Roses benefitting the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Heck, you can even make a donation in honor of Susan, FC or anybody you want to on the cool little scrolling board on the side of the page……neat-o!!! Better than breakfast cereal!!!!

    Thanks……enjoy the show!!!!

  10. Comment by Megan | 09.20.2007 | 7:57 am

    So sad to learn that the pink is all sold out in women’s I was really hoping to be able to replace the one that the hospital cut off of me.

  11. Comment by KT | 09.20.2007 | 8:02 am

    Hey now, Primalwear has some great jerseys for us chicks. Most everyone else has boring pastel jerseys for gals. I want one of the Pink Floyd ones. But of course, they don’t make any of the good rock ones for women, just for men. Sucks.

    How come 99% of the Primalwear beer ones are for PBR and Coors? There are too many good beer companies out there to waste my money on a jersey for crappy beer. Or a crappy beer jersey, choose your own emphasis.

    Twin6 actually has some neat jerseys for the women. Terry does too, if you can find them.

  12. Comment by Clydesteve | 09.20.2007 | 8:17 am

    Man, at first I thought you were picking on Primal Wear, whose clothing lines I have never been that fond of, but……… they so deserve it. The leisure suit one really made me gag.

    My mom is a expert seamstress, but as one of her adult children have all come to the conclusion that she rolled off the fashion bus at some point and never caught up. One moment in my life that really makes me cringe in retrospect: (there are a lot of them!) On leave from the Navy while my submarine was in port, my sister was getting married, and I was fresh out of formal civilian wear that fit. My mom made each of us three boys Navy blue liesure jackets to wear with gray slacks. The younger brothers were still in college & High School, i.e. not paying attention, and I showed up too late to point out that this particular hideous fashion was only still worn by Lawrence Welk. At least they were not powder blue………

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Can you imagine how cool it would be to have your FC moniker on the scrolling dedications bar on my LIVSTRONG fund raising site honoring Susan Nelson in her fight against cancer? Almost as cool as that T6 “The Cross” jersey, that’s how cool.
    The Lance Armstrong Foundation is the real deal in helping cancer fighters fight, supporting anti-cancer research and care, and encouraging a national conversation to mobilize the country against this disease.
    http://portland07.livestrong.org/spete
    Mike Roadie & I are riding in LIVESTRONG Challenge rides, and we are both invited, thanks to the generosity of our donor teams, to Ride for the Roses. Caren G. is walking 60 miles against breast cancer in another event I am too lazy to look up.
    How about it?
    heading out to interbike early tuesday morning from florida. will stop by twin six and say howdy. if i mention your name, i won’t get thrown out, will i?
    yep it’s a lot of fun and a lot of work if you’re going for your shop. i’m taking a bunch of pictures and can send them to you if you want. it will be mostly road stuff but if i see anything interesting who knows.
    Go Susan!
  14. Comment by Not So Skinny Cathy | 09.20.2007 | 8:28 am
    I’m right there with ya on Las Vegas, Fatty. I went there in August for a wedding – ugh. I couldn’t get out of that place fast enough. Creepy is an appropriate description. But I’d be tempted by Interbike.
    If anyone is looking for way cool womens jerseys (other than Susan’s pink jersey of course), the Velo Bella team jersey is available at Team Estrogen:
    http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=27245
    High quality, womens cut from Garneau. You can get matching shorts, etc too. Very nice stuff.
    SPeaking of jerseys, here’s a real conversation I had with my Grandma while watching the tour… back when people watched the tour.
    Grandma: I didn’t know they let women race in that big race.
    Me: I think there’s a women’s race later, but there aren’t any women in that group.
    Grandma: Oh, I figured the one in the flowered top must be a woman.
    Me: Huh? what flowered jersey?
    Grandma: The white one, with the red roses all over it.
    Me: Those are polka dots and he gets to wear that because he’s the best in the mountains.
    Grandma: Oh, wouldn’t he prefer a more masculine looking shirt?
    –How do you respond to that? I think I was speachless… or at least decided that the conversation didn’t need to continue in that direction.
    Thanks Fatty for making a jersey I’m not ashamed of wearing. The original is a tough jersey. The WIN jersey isn’t quite as masculine, but brings attention to where attention is needed and I wear it with pride and respond to comments about it with pride.
    if anyone else ventures out to Vegas a.k.a. the devils’ playground, don’t just hang out in town. go out west to Dante’s Peak, it overlooks Death Valley. also, Mount Charleston is about an hour or so out of town and goes to approx. 12,000 feet, beautiful. just drive out to the desert, very beautiful and more wildlife than you would expect.
    as for the “Strip”, yeah, suck pretty much covers this “oasis”. all you want to do is take showers 24-7 after walking through the casinos and non-stop cigarette smoking.
  21. Comment by Susan (another one) | 09.20.2007 | 9:34 am
    Agree that the TwinSix guys’ jerseys are good. Gals are not as good, though still better than most. Wish they would just make the guys in women’s sizes.
  22. Comment by UtRacerDad | 09.20.2007 | 10:21 am
    Well since I will be at interbike (first time ever) I’ll make sure I let them know that there is a small shop in provo that really would like to carry them. Then all I have to do is convince Racer that he wants to carry them :).
  23. Comment by Lowrydr | 09.20.2007 | 10:28 am
    Love the Twin Six guys work. I vote for a Red & Black FC jersey for the Red to be the predominate color that way Kenny’s blood won’t stand out so much next time. It’s all sweet…………
    Twin Six – cool stuff – another quality export from Minnesota. That’s where I’m from, so is dug. ’nuff said.
    Sans Auto called the original FC jersey tough, and I have to agree.
    So I ask, why is the original FC jersey so stiff and hot? I much prefer the feel of the pink WIN jersey. Which material is used for the other Twin 6 jerseys?
    These are real questions, but rereading my post, I realize the wording may not generate serious responses. Oh well.
    Awesome! Twin Six has tons of new jerseys for women. I’ll be counting down to March ‘08.
  28. Comment by TIMK | 09.20.2007 | 10:54 am
    Gonna have to go on record as saying “The Masher” is hideous. Does it come with a propeller beanie? Maybe a pocket protector for the back pockets? The rest of the stuff at TwinSix is nice and I agree with your picks here, but if you wear the Masher then you deserve to have your lunch money stolen.
    For the record, my bro and I got called f—–ts not once, but twice wearing our pink FC jerseys during Lotoja. I took the comment with pride and tried to comprehend the ignorance that would generate such an outburst. I must admit, however, that when we saw the truck the jerks were driving parked at the side of the road, we contemplated a “natural break” to “wash it.”
    But you’ve also reminded me that I’ve been totally slack and still haven’t sent the wager box from challenge. Will try to get to post office today. *smacks hand* I grovel at your feet.
    Actually you can get good beer jersey’s. I have a nice Leinenkugel jersey- it ugly- but I love their beer. Miller makes a nice one too.
    I like the Primal Wear jerseys. I bought an Ellsworth Dragon jersey- limited ed- when they were putting the proceeds toward one of their employee’s medical problems. I believe the artist for the jersey had cancer.
    I also have their firefighter jersey because I support my firefighter friends- and it’s wicked cool.
    All the rest of my Primal Wear jerseys 4-5 I have because my 8yr old son likes them and I manage to shred a jersey a year.
    They make some good stuff and it’s not god-awful expensive. And it doesn’t make me weep when I trash something.
    I don’t think everything that TwinSix makes is great either. Everybody’s tastes are different.
  41. Comment by cyclingphun.blogspot.com | 09.20.2007 | 4:15 pm
    I wanted an XL (sob, whine complain). Now what the heck am I to do, I don’t think I’ll fit into a large until at least next year… I guess I could be patient and wait, or buy it and hang on till I’ve lost the pounds, or just settle on having the Pink and not (my favorite color) the orange, or I can stop whining like a girl and ride… Nah I’ll whine… OK, off to ride.
    FC – You saved my butt. I had promised to buy the husband the original FC jersey as part of a bargain and was horrified when I logged on to Twin Six last night to find they were out (did get to see the cool new jerseys tho’). So, you can imagine how glad I was to read your blog today and find you had some left in his size. Yep, I’m the reason they went from 4 to 3. Thanks muchly!
