My Awards Script, Plus a Lot of Names

10.20.2010 | 11:08 am

I really appreciate everyone taking the time yesterday to leave a comment on why you have joined the fight against cancer. I admit, I got choked up a number of times while reading your reasons, and I want to say that you inspire me to stay motivated in this fight. Thank you.

Also, to those of you in Team Fatty Austin: Thank you for sending your photos in. Those will make an appearance in the video, too.

Late last night, I finished writing and recording my script for my video, and sent the whole thing in — my script, my video of me talking, my voiceover, your quotes, photos of Team Fatty Austin, and the list of people who have donated to my LiveStrong Challenge page — to the production company.

I’m sure they’ll make it really great to watch. But meanwhile — since any award anyone from Team Fatty belongs to all of Team Fatty — I wanted to give you a preview of what I’ll be saying.

So here’s the script I wrote, along with a few of the images I sent in.

Team Fatty’s Champion / Messenger Award Video Script

I’m Elden Nelson, the blogger behind But please, feel free to call me Fatty.

The Team Champion award really belongs to the team. And the Messenger award really belongs to the people who donated. So while I tell you a little story about Team Fatty, I’d like to show you photos of some of the team, along with some reasons why they’ve joined the fight against cancer.

And I’m also going to acknowledge all the people who donated to my LiveStrong Challenge. There are 975 names here, so they might go by kinda fast. [A Note from Fatty: Check the bottom of today's post to see that list. It's pretty darned impressive, if I do say so myself.]

I’m a very lazy person by nature. I’m terribly disorganized. I am not detailed-oriented. All I’m good at is riding my bike and telling goofy stories about riding my bike.

The truth is, I’m the very last person you’d expect to be captaining even one LiveStrong Challenge team, much less five teams.

So the fact is, I joined the fight against cancer because I was forced to.

You see, my late wife, Susan, fought breast cancer for nearly five years. She fought with focus, courage, kindness, creativity, and outrageous endurance.

While she fought, I called LiveStrong. We got information. Support. And inspiration.

So as I told Susan’s and my story online, I started thinking: if Susan was going to fight, I had to fight too. Joining up with LiveStrong seemed like a perfect match.

I asked my readers to join me in the fight. And they have. Way beyond my expectations. I mean, 1.3 million dollars over the course of two years? I still can’t even wrap my mind around that.

How did Team Fatty do it? Well, we did it different.

Earlier this year, 500 of us paid $75 for the privilege of participating in the Third Annual Fat Cyclist 100 Miles of Nowhere – a fake event where you ride a hundred miles on the smallest course you can imagine, as close to your own home as possible. It was completely ridiculous – but it was fun too – Team Fatty members, all over the world, riding nowhere for 100 miles. One of them on unicycles, two of them on an aircraft carrier. It was awesome, knowing there were hundreds of other people doing the same ridiculous thing.

And it raised tens of thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer.

That’s Team Fatty in a nutshell.

Or there was the time we got Bob Roll to promise to shave his head if we could raise $5000 during the Tour of California. I loved watching when Johan Bruyneel shaved Bob’s head on TV.

Team Fatty’s had a lot of luck getting companies and people to help us fundraise. Gary Fisher Bicycles. Ibis Bicycles. Intense Bicycles. Sycip Bicycles. Orbea. Clif Bar. DZ Nuts. Twin Six. And most of all, Shimano. As it turns out, there are a lot of good companies who love to join a great cause.

04 Banner.jpg

Maybe the greatest thing about Team Fatty, though, is that we’re a great, huge group of friends who’ve mostly never met each other. When we ride together this weekend, for many of us it will be the first time we’ve ever seen another Team Fatty member.

But that doesn’t mean we’re strangers. We’ve got some incredibly important things in common.

We love to ride. We love to eat. We love to fight cancer with focus. With courage, with kindness, With creativity.

In short, Team Fatty fights like Susan.

“….Maybe the greatest thing about Team Fatty, though, is that we’re a great, huge group of friends who’ve mostly never met each other…” This is why we will win! You never fail to touch my heart, Fatty.

  5. Comment by OldManUtah | 10.20.2010 | 12:03 pm

I like it Fatty. You will inspire even more people over the next year. Keep up the fight. Congratulations to all of us “Team Fatty”! *Not gonna talk about how I almost cried as I read over the list of names of donars. Great job everyone!*

Don’t forget, Elden is not just “lazy” he is “fat and lazy”.

Nice script. Can’t wait to see the video!

This is definitely one of those cases where the sum is more than the parts.

  12. Comment by NYCCarlos | 10.20.2010 | 1:14 pm

Great job Fatty. I’m really proud to be a part of this incredible team of people.

I’ve got one question though… if our 2009 total was higher than our 2010 (to date), what can we do in the next 3 months to surpass that?

  13. Comment by MattC | 10.20.2010 | 1:52 pm

    Very nice Fatty!

I’m so sad that I won’t be making the trip to Austin again this year to see you and the team. Last year was really something. Huge kudos to ALL of us ‘Fatties’ for what we’ve accomplished this year, and to you Fatty for leading and inspiring us. To all of Team Fatty Austin, CONGRATS and WAY TO GO! Enjoy your moment in the spotlight…you’ve earned it.

A loyal Fatty soldier in this fight to the end.

(oh, and Noodle, words don’t do justice to your accomplishment…I’m truly speechless! Have a great time in Austin and a safe trip back home!)

Proud to be part of such an awesome thing! Thanks Elden, for bringing us all together!

  16. Comment by Joel P. | 10.20.2010 | 2:28 pm

What NYCCarlos said. Being a part of Team Fatty Philly this year was truly one of my best life experiences. Also, when you finally do meet the friends you’ve never met they become friends for life. Finally, @ OldManUtah, I’m not gonna talk about how some tears did trickle out as I read the names, I’m just not.
    Joel P.

Great work Fatty, I’m having a little cry at my desk, because you’ve moved me so much. I can’t wait to do the 100 miles of nowhere next year. It’s so important that we fight cancer, because it affects everyone, there’s no one on the planet who doesn’t know someone who’s had the big C.

Your speech last year (comparison between yourself and Lance) in Austin was awesome … but you’ve topped it this year. Like so many others, I am so proud to be part of Team Fatty. Allez, and thanks!

  45. Comment by DanO | 10.21.2010 | 8:18 am

Thanks for Sending Phil, the guy on the tandem in the pictures above, an invite to the dinner. He’s currently driving a few Team Fatty bikes to Austin, including mine. See you this weekend.

  46. Comment by davidh-marin,ca | 10.21.2010 | 9:15 am

I can picture all 975 fatties standing and cheering your speech. If not in body then in spirit. Only 5 teams? Maybe there’s an opportunity to bring these friends together… and captain another team… can anyone say FATTYS GRAN FONDO ALPINE. Thank you for bringing us together.

  47. Comment by AngieG | 10.21.2010 | 9:20 am

Oh my, the memories of last year. :-)Philly Jen as my roomie, watching her dye MattC’s hair pink because he lost the Team Captain bet, being dropped by said MattC so he could lead Fatty out to try and catch Lance, the beer and margaritas at the second to the last rest stop (only in Texas), but mostly coming across the line to see Fatty waiting there for me, just as he did for every Team Fatty rider. Like my mom waiting for the bus to bring me home from school.:-)
I wish I could be there. But I am confident my fellow Fatty’s will represent!!! Have a wonderful time and keep the rubberside down.

  48. Comment by ChefJT | 10.21.2010 | 9:42 am

Dude, why do you make me tear up and cry before I have to go to work!?!
It’s been an honor to be associated with such a dedicated group of giving persons. Looking forward to the day when we celebrate the end of Team Fatty, the day when we’re no longer needed to fight cancer because cancer will have died.

Until then we have plenty to do so “Allez Fatty!”

  49. Comment by Jodi | 10.21.2010 | 10:51 am

So bittersweet to see that picture of Susan and my sweetheart of a neice. Well done, again brother. So proud of you and how you’ve somehow managed to turn such a hard time into a positive force in the lives of thousands of people.

    Still fighting like Susan.

Glad others are liking their team fatty stuff- the women’s bibs fit great but the jersey is awful… I have half a dozen size large twin six women’s jerseys that all fit brilliantly now I have one that I have to return because it’s too tight at my hips and waist, weirdly very blousey above that and too long so that I can’t zip it all the way up without the thing trying to rise up and strangle me with the zipper poking me in the chin. I can’t figure out whether this means I need a larger size, a smaller size, or to just send it back for a refund and never buy a jersey from twin six again. (They say all of their jerseys are an inch longer for 2011.) I’m incredibly bummed out ’cause I love the color/design this year and was not a fan of the white last year (but hey, that’s the one that fits). I don’t suppose anyone has one of the previous jersey incarnations that are mostly black in a women’s size L and want to trade for a nice new jersey? Everyone else thinks they’re brilliant!

Thanks for recognizing those of us who donated by name. That was a very classy touch, but is completly within your character. I am proud to be part of Team Fatty, and my wife and I are planning on doing the 100 miles to Nowhere next spring. Hopefully you can work it out to increase the registration numbers so you don’t have a Boston Marathon 1st day sell out situation on your hands!

My husband and I are planning on doing the 100 miles of nowhere together before we move in the spring. But that is so little compared to what you do all of the time, thank you!

P.S. I got my Team Fatty gear from Twin Six today!!!! (Husband is so jealous!)

I would have read the list but my glasses are all foggy now.

J- No need to be so grouchy- talk to the guys at TwinSix, they’re awesome. They’ll work it out. It’s usually best to get in touch with them ASAP, they’ve never failed to make it right for me.

Jenni- I talked to them: they said they changed the cut on all of their jerseys for 2011 and I could return it or maybe, just maybe, exchange it for a different size… depending on what they happen to have in stock still when it gets back to them (and they can’t hold anything in stock waiting for the exchange)… if I want to exchange… but nothing is going to fit as nicely as last year’s jerseys so (if it’s even in stock) my choice is the same length as last year but an inch narrower or an inch wider and two inches longer than what I have now… neither of which options seem likely to improve things unless I lose an inch or more around waist/hips/butt… so yeah, pretty much I think I need to suck it up and wear a jersey that doesn’t fit or not have a fat cyclist jersey for this year… or I guess consider the advantages of bulimia… I think it’s fair to be bummed… but hey, the bibs are lovely

Congratulations Elden and Team Fatty. I was hoping to come to Austin this weekend, but we have a wedding to go to. Will be with you all in spirit this weekend. Just got my Team Fatty jersey yesterday. Also made a donation to your page to get you over the $30k mark. Go kick some butt.

Sorry Claire, that’s my husband… Ben Kaufman :-) You gave me a great chuckle! And I know he’ll appreciate the compliment! He and his best friend are down in Austin right now ready to ride Sunday.
(oh, and unfortunately, the handlebars are gone… not allowed to have a ’stach below the corners of the mouth at this new job, so no mustache at all now. I have to admit, I kind of miss it!)

Anyway, if you didn’t guess, he’s a police officer… and our family is now living in Missouri… originally from Vermont. If you go back thru Fatty’s posts a ways you can see a post “a day in the life of…” by Ben. He teaches cops mountain bike patrol.

Have fun everyone down in Austin!!! I wish the twins and I could be there… but 10 hours in a car with two 6 year olds seems a bit too much!!! ;-) We’re thinking of you all! Stay safe!!
