Weight Loss Challenge Weigh-In: Overwhelmed By Life Edition

04.8.2012 | 2:46 pm

Hi there! I’m sitting in an airport right now, about to fly out to Portland. And it occurs to me that — fool that I am — I have not posted winners from week 2 of the challenge, nor reminded people that it’s time to do your week 3 weigh in.

I have reasons, and I’ll give you a hint of what they are:

  • My day job
  • My family
  • My book projects (yes, plural)
  • Spring weather that makes me want to ride instead of write or blog or otherwise be near a computer when I don’t absolutely have to be.
  • Laziness

I suspect that most of you sympathize with the first four bullet points above, as well as secretly suspect that the final bullet point is the real reason.

And you’re probably right.

Anyway, those of you in the challenge who haven’t yet checked in with your weight, go to this page to do so.

Very Interesting Statistics

Here are some interesting things we’ve learned from last week’s weigh-in:

  • Women continue to dominate the challenge! With an average weight loss of 0.99% (as opposed to the men’s average of 0.72%), women are demonstrating that the old adage that men lose weight more easily than women may be true, but that easy doesn’t matter over the long haul — being self-disciplined matters. And the women are beating the men handily in the self-discipline department. Nice work, ladies!
  • Midwest is best: This week, the Midwest US jumped to the top of the leader board, with an average of 1.18% weight lost. Last week’s leader — outside the US — dropped to fourth place this week, at 0.75%.
  • Why Tri: The bonus question this week was “What’s your favorite kind of riding,” and I’m horribly embarrassed to say that triathletes won, with 2.5% weight lost. And that’s all I have to say about that.
  • Ku-Ku-Kukui: Monster congratulations to Kukui, who lost an astonishing 4.08% last week and is therefore the winner of the box o’ Honey Stingers!
  • Tommysmo is luckily random: The random number I drew this week is 26, which is the number associated with Tommysmo (who lost a very respectable 2 pounds, by the way). Tommysmo will get a gift certificate to Twin Six — which will come in handy for maybe buying a t-shirt a size smaller than what you’re used to, eh Tommysmo?

Monday Stuff

Honestly, I have no idea what it’s going to be like to be on the set of Leverage. Maybe it’ll be totally cool for me to take and post pictures throughout the day, in which case that’s exactly what I’ll do. If not, expect a recap on Tuesday or so.

Honestly, I’m pretty nervous for tomorrow. Wish me gluck.

Woo hoo! I can relate to ALL your bullets and add some of my own! No worries!

You’re going to do GREAT on Leverage!!! Paul seems like a super awesome guy and I’m hoping that all the actors and actresses are all super sweet and nice. I’m certain they will be shocked and awed by your quads. As a matter of fact, I’m certain they will be speechless. Good Gluck Fatty! :) Can’t wait until the episode airs!

Also, gained .5 pounds this week after making it to the gym once. :-/ Pffftttt Hopefully, I’ll be back on track. It would be fun for those of us who still need to lose weight after the challenge to continue to do so either using the current method or maybe we can have a group page on Facebook? There wouldn’t be any prizes, but I love how this is keeping me honest and really making me think before I snack or skip the gym. This week, work got in the way. Now that the snow is melting, I’m getting anxious to get out on my bike!

    Good luck!

My dog tells me the camera adds 5 pounds to me.

The good news is that it’s easy to lose.

The bad news is that I still look like me.

But you’ll be fine; you’ll still look like Stanley what’s his name.

    Things to do in Portlandia:
    1. Say Hi! to my son as you whiz by Portland State.
    2. Eat copious amounts of delicious food at Cartlandia
    3. Join the Screen Actors Guild to protect your options lest Paul G. take advantage.
    4. Eat a do-nut at Voo-Doo Do-nuts.
    5. Dinner at Le Bistro Montage, under the bridge in the Central Eastside.
    6.Want to ride?

Have a great time and break a virtual leg.

Oh, one more thing, Fatty – Get down to Powells Books – I thik BSNYC is doing a signing there.

Bike Snob is reading at Powell’s on Tuesday night (http://www.powells.com/events), unfortunately. I imagine the Leverage crew will take good care of you, but if you’re looking for a local guide to food or brews, I work downtown and would be happy to show you around…some great beer bars in this town!

LUCK? You don’t need luck. Not with all your raw native ability and charm and good looks, and years and years of acting classes and resume listing all your Shakespearian experience. So just be you, and go get ‘em.

    Fatty –

I NEED YOUR HELP! I want to buy a new mountain bike — I used to ride ages ago, but quit and started riding horses instead. Now, I want to start again. Can you please please please help me? I don’t know which bike I should look at for a beginner, what type of suspension is best, or anything.

    PS: LOVE your site!

Wait a minute! Leverage? Isn’t that the show where they con people?

If someone tells you they’re doing an homage to the Wizard of Oz by recreating the witch on the bike in the tornado scene, make sure you’ve at least brought a wind jacket.

You can never be too careful.

    Good luck tomorrow!

Also, I think my weight loss challenge question is still pending: do we sign up the 100 MON and get a refund if we beat you? Or will there be late registration for non-winning weight loss participants?

Good luck in Oregon, Fatty! Great town with some awesome beer and awesomely painful Thai food!

thanks for the random act of awarding! More motivation for me to keep on posting!

    Woo hoo! Honey Stingers!

Best of luck, Fatty! You’re going to rock their socks off! (speaking of, if you happen across Christian Kane’s socks, could you steal them for me, k thanks… or maybe a picture of him will suffice…) :)

    Have fun!

Why should Fatty be nervous? It is the cast and crew of Leverage, as well as the city of Portland that should have the shakes. After all, how often does a mastermind, world famous internet celebrity blogging superstar come to town? Have a good time, and make sure they don’t cause you to many problems.
    Good Gluck.
PS don’t tell them about that whole tree across the trail thing. trust me on this.

Fatty, while the cameras are rolling…don’t do anything stupid…never mind, I realize that just won’t be possible. Come prepared with a plastic leg cast.

To Tracy above horse to bike transition. Assuming you had a nice horse you should upgrade for a mtn bike. Go to good bike shop, one that can ‘fit’ you to a bike. Don’t mention your price range for a bike. Let them show you what they have available. Do some test rides, consider asking Fatty for a loaner bike (see a recent blog post).
Then start looking for a bike in the $4000 and up range. That price and above you will force yourself to learn.

@Colorado Mama Fatty has a “Shakepearean” past???

This is a post we need to hear about. Either from you or the ‘Fat Man himself’. Are there pictures?
