$37,500?! Fat Cyclist Readers Are The BEST

06.23.2008 | 11:41 am

I’ve got tons to talk about today — the Triathalon and the Raffle — and a surprisingly small amount of time to write. Susan and I are going to be busy with doctors today. I’ll explain tomorrow, when I know more.

For right now, let’s talk about the results of the raffle. Because it’s pretty incredibly exciting stuff.

Just over a week ago, I announced that Ibis, in partnership with Shimano, was donating a dream bike: An Ibis Silk SL, complete with Dura-Ace components and Dura-Ace SL wheels. Like this, but with Dura-Ace Wheels:

Oh, mercy. That is one sexy bike.

Anyway, we raffled the Silk SL off at $5.00 a ticket, with all proceeds going directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

And Fat Cyclist readers showed me exactly what generosity looks like.

In the course of nine days, here’s what happened. 1234 different people donated money, from $5.00 all the way up to $500. And the raffle earned $37,500. Yes, you raised $37,500 toward fighting cancer.

That’s about three times as much as I predicted we’d raise when I asked Ibis to donate this bike.

I Can’t Believe that I Of All People Wound Up Winning the Bike
Like many of you, I put some money into the raffle. Of course, I never expected to win, since I rarely win anything, and have never before won a major prize in a raffle that I myself put on.

Until now, of course.

Imagine my surprise to find that I drew my own number when I did the raffle. “Well, that’s unexpected,” I said to myself. But I was sure my readers would understand and believe that I was being totally honest about the drawing and that it just kind of worked out that way.

I kid, I kid. I didn’t win the bike. I wonder what I would have done if I had drawn my number, though.

OK, let’s talk about who really won the Silk SL.

Meet Matt
Last Friday afternoon, Matt of Seattle, Washington, donated $100 in the raffle. He says, “I never expected to win anything, I just had some extra laying around and figured LAF could find a good way to use it. I know they do good things across the board.”

A good attitude, to be sure. And since donating at that time got him tickets 7223 – 7242, his good attitude paid off in a huge way: the winning ticket number was #7232, smack dab in the middle of his set of tickets.

Here’s a little from Matt’s email, when he found out he had won.

Wow seriously? I really won the Ibis dream bike? Wow, super damn cool.

I live in Seattle and been a proud Fat Cyclist for the last 2 years (6′ 2, 185); I proudly wear ‘07 and ‘08 pink lemonade jerseys and have a good, but ever decreasing number of pink socks, the dryer eats them.

I rode the Tour de Blast (Mt. St. Helens) this weekend in my pink jersey, on the same day as your “Triathalon.” A picture at the top with St Helens would have been included, but the camera is missing in the post camping mess. Here is one from this summer.

The Ibis will be an excellent weapon of choice for the Death Ride and RAMROD this year.

Every time I pull my fatcyclist jersey on for a group ride I get comments, be it a ‘go fatty’ often a ‘win susan’ one of my favorites being ‘f___ cancer.’ When I get these I have a friend I didn’t know before. In a weird way you have introduced me to some really good people. Thank you.

Matt seems like a great guy; I’m excited he’s getting this bike.

Thank You
I’m the kind of person who starts feeling anxious if I’m not accomplishing something, and so cancer is an especially demoralizing disease, because a lot of the time there’s simply nothing I can do to help Susan.

So, apart from the good this money will do for those either are fighting or will have to fight cancer, working with Ibis and Shimano and BikeMike and all of you to raise some money to fight cancer has been very good for me.

Thank you.

PS: Matt has a blog of his own and talks about winning the Ibis here.

PPS: Chuck Ibis has a post about the raffle in his not-a-blog here.

PPPS: Tomorrow I will talk about the Triathalon, but let me whet your appetite with this series of photos of BotchedExperiment and his six-year-old daughter, as they take the plunge at the sliding rock (photos courtesy of Sue Richardson Photography):

Look at Botched’s glasses. Yeah, those are gone forever.

I just hope that little girl escaped from that scary man.

    Congrats Matt!! You dog! :-)
    Fatty, who won the Rig????????

  2. Comment by SurlyCommuter | 06.23.2008 | 11:49 am

CONGRATULATIONS! To Mike and to LAF and to all the competitors this weekend. BTW – that has got to be one of the best series of pictures I’ve seen! Is Botched using his daughters shirt to pull himself to safety in the last two frames? Priceless!

  3. Comment by scank | 06.23.2008 | 11:52 am

    Excellent work everyone.

  4. Comment by Wes | 06.23.2008 | 11:53 am

Super cool, Fatty! Way to go Matt!!!

    Fighting cancer R-O-C-K-S!!

  5. Comment by Flyin' Ute | 06.23.2008 | 11:57 am

Congrats Matt. We are all a little envious, but sounds like you will ride it well.

Glasgow and I showed up at your house about 12:05 which was 30 min. before our forcasted arrival. Not bad considering we had just ridden for 8 hours and climbed over 10,000 ft. (Pole line pass to heber to gaurdsman to Suncrest)
Everybody was still riding or at the slide. We were to tired to stay. I did have a diet coke with lime…thank you!!! didn’t have the energy to make it back.
Do we at least get a boom-a-rang for riding our bikes the farthest to make it to the shindig?

Nice meeting you Susan. Keep fighting.

  6. Comment by KanyonKris | 06.23.2008 | 11:58 am

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Fat Cyclist TriathAlon. Big thanks to Fatty and family and all those who helped out!

Congratulations Matt on winning the Ibis!

Botched: A team from Child Protective Services will be at your door soon.

  7. Comment by BotchedExperiment | 06.23.2008 | 12:07 pm

What everyone needs to know about sliding rock is that all the water you see was snow 20 minutes ago.

I like to help keep the children of china employed, so I always buy $5.00 walmart sunglasses.

Yeah, the little girl got away. While we were under the water, I found out that she wasn’t very buoyant, so I let her go.

She actually wanted to go again, but I was DONE!

  8. Comment by blinddrew | 06.23.2008 | 12:09 pm

Way to go people! WIN SUSAN!

  9. Comment by Lowrydr | 06.23.2008 | 12:09 pm

So what’s the Utah state law for torturing kids with what appears to be really cold water?

Way to go Matt, dang it, oh well at least the money hits a really good cause. And a younger man would be able to ride it faster than me anyway.

    Win, Susan, Win

  11. Comment by Lori | 06.23.2008 | 12:14 pm

Aw, rats!! I REALLY wanted that bike – I’m trying to convince my husband that bikes are a good thing and him riding that thing would have gone a long way. Congrats, Matt!

Way to go FoF!! WIN Susan!!

  12. Comment by Jared | 06.23.2008 | 12:15 pm

That last picture is hilarious! I showed it to a couple of guys at work and their instant response was “Run little girl RUN!!!”

Way to go friends of Fatty for raising all that money!

  13. Comment by clambertsmith | 06.23.2008 | 12:15 pm

Looks like you guys had a great time – congrats Matt! WIN Susan!

  14. Comment by Clydesteve | 06.23.2008 | 12:19 pm

Congats to Mike. (I donated more than him to increase my chances, but clearly this was Providence, not chance that Matt won – I do not begrudge him the Ibis one. single. bit. ) The fink.

Congrats to Bike Mike / Fatty / Ibis for the GREAT fund-raising effort. $37,500 is completly phenomenal! I have actually been a bit disappointed at Fat Cyclist readers, because ever since Fatty announced that Bike Mike was the official LiveSTRONG ~ Fat Cyclist fundraising channel, it has been my opinion that Bike Mike shaould have been flat out kicking my butt in fund raising. And he hasn’t. Until now. I am genuinely glad for that. (As opposed to surface glad / kind of sub-surface envious of Matt). Because I believe in this cause, and I also wanted FC readers to have skin in this game along with their hearts. Way to show Susan and Fatty that it’s not all talk, folks!

Fatty, the last 3 pics are priceless! Sue Richardson Photography got an excellent catch with the falying sunglasses and the scary man. I hope the little girl got away, too.

Man, I wish I could have been there!

  15. Comment by Clydesteve | 06.23.2008 | 12:20 pm

Oh, bother…. Matt – not Mike in my 1st sentence above.

Fatty – how about a proof reader / preview thing? Never mind this is a humor site.

  16. Comment by pipebaum | 06.23.2008 | 12:21 pm

    $37,500 pfftt

Can you imagine the planning and synchronization needed to get 1234 donations?

    From the numerology guide:

1234, 234, 456 – If you are repeatedly seeing ascending number sequences such as 1234, this is a sign from your Spirit Guides that these are progressive thoughts. You will see this sign when thinking about an area of your life that you are concerned about and want to change, or thinking about a particular subject. Seeing this number sequence immediately after these thoughts is a sign that your thoughts are progressive; your life will progress by following these thoughts and you will have your Spirit Guides support in its pursuit.

    Win Susan!

  17. Comment by IamMatt | 06.23.2008 | 12:23 pm

Had an awesome time! Thanks for drawing my number on the killer fat cyclist jersey and providing good grub a ride worth remembering and cold dip in snow water.

Oh and congrats on the win Matt..

Fight on and Win Nelson family!

  18. Comment by Clydesteve | 06.23.2008 | 12:26 pm

I would like to make a random comment about the quality of FC spectators on Botched’s slide run…. Fatty, do you actually have any fat friends???

I wonder if Fatty and the core group sit around and snicker at all the actually fat FC readers, and the wild ruse they have been pulling to get all of these portly porcine cyclists to come out of the closet.

  19. Comment by Duane | 06.23.2008 | 12:28 pm

congrats Matt – Am I envious of your good fortune… you bet. Enjoy the ride.

For the amount raised by the Fatty Nation (or is world?)… Holy Crap!

  20. Comment by Clydesteve | 06.23.2008 | 12:29 pm

Oh, and Fatty – You did not fool me for one minute with the “I drew myself for the Ibis” joke. But it was funny. I would have been disappointed if you had not written that.

  21. Comment by fatty | 06.23.2008 | 12:31 pm

Clydesteve – yeah, the folks at the top look like they’re there for a photo shoot, don’t they? as it turns out, though, they weren’t with the TriathAlon. The Sliding Rock is a popular place; there are usually at least a few people there at any given moment on warm days.

  22. Comment by TomE | 06.23.2008 | 12:34 pm

$37,500!!!! Wahoo!!! Can’t wait for the post about the day!!!

  23. Comment by 331miles | 06.23.2008 | 12:37 pm

Pipebaum — the spirit guide was unhappy with man’s meddling in the cold chute runoff, and thus demanded 1 pair of sunglasses. He(she) was given them courtesy of botchedexperiment…

  24. Comment by eclecticdeb | 06.23.2008 | 12:42 pm

While I’m severely disappointed that I didn’t win the Ibis, I’m very happy to see it went to someone who is (probably) more deserving than me.

Sorry to miss the Tri — I was busy all last week riding with a 20 teenage boy scouts down the Northern California coastline. 280 miles of hills, camping, and (err) poison oak. Finished strong with a 55 mile ride from San Franciso in 100 degree weather.

  25. Comment by leroy | 06.23.2008 | 12:47 pm

    Congratulations, Matt!

And it’s not like the rest of us won’t have a chance to win another Ibis next weekend.

FC — You are doing this again next weekend, right?

  26. Comment by jenni | 06.23.2008 | 12:56 pm

    How YOU doin’?

Way to go Matt! Fatty, couldn’t make the Triathalon, but I rode 26 miles of Trail Ridge road from Estes Park to the visitor center, just to punish myself for not going.

Looks like you hade a great time, can’t wait for the post.

    WIN Susan!

  29. Comment by Denise | 06.23.2008 | 1:20 pm

Winning the bike would have been great but I am more disappointed that I just wasn’t able to be there. Mmmmm, brats!

    Congrats Matt, ride it hard!

Great pictures of Botched and daughter. She looks cold but he looks horrified! LOL!

  30. Comment by william | 06.23.2008 | 1:26 pm

Awesome and great pictures. I hope you all had a good weekend. I have been rocking both the new and the old fatty jersies at 12 and 24 hour mtb races in Denmark this year.

  31. Comment by Canadian Roadie | 06.23.2008 | 1:33 pm

Definitely looking forward to seeing more pics and reading all about the triathalon. I was experiencing my own kind of personal triathalon that day – climb, fall, slide. Repeat. For 9 hours.(www.kusamklimb.ca) Haha, hope you all had fun! Congrats Matt and a big WOW! to all the funds raised.

  32. Comment by Mike Roadie | 06.23.2008 | 1:34 pm

This has been the most amazing week ever!! I barely could step away from the desk without the email indicator going off; but all of you are to be commended for a job well done, and for a great cause. The website is just “this close” to passing the $50,000 goal we set at the beginning of the year–I thought that was just outrageous folly.
The real question remains though……did Matt also win any water bottles to go with the bike!!??
    Thanks again FC Nation!!!!!

  33. Comment by KanyonKris | 06.23.2008 | 1:37 pm

331miles – The spirit guide had a thing for eye wear that day as my swim goggle were also claimed.

  34. Comment by rich | 06.23.2008 | 1:44 pm

Congrats on the bike Matt (ok, so I almost mean it)

Fatty, I am surprised that you were surprised at the amount of money you raised. It was no big deal…you have lots and lots of friends out here. It was our pleasure to donate. Most of of wish we could do more.

And finally…that last photo is a hoot.

sounds like fun was had by everyone but botched daughter. that 2nd to last picture is the look of sheer, freezing water induced terror.

if anyone comes to seattle and rides a 58, you can ride the bike, im serious.

    37k raised? thats amazing.

I look forward to the bike, im leaning towards the red right now

Congrats, Matt. Thanks for entering for me – just make sure you order the red one when you ship it to me. :)

Good job to all of Fatt’s World – not only $37,500 but to have 1,234 (what are the odds of that number coming up?).

Too bad I couldn’t make the Tri – put me down for next year. Wow – those pics are awesome. The last pic is hilarious – swim away from the freaky man, little girl! Also, the 2nd to last pic shows Botched’s finger outstretched from behind the girl’s right arm as he tries to grab her and save him from cold water. Hilarious stuff.

FC – I sincerely hope you and Susan get good news today.

  42. Comment by NW | 06.23.2008 | 2:49 pm

Sounds like a good guy won the Ibis. Congrats, Matt! Good on Ibis for donating it.

The amount of money raised for cancer was incredible. Wow, I am really shocked a that number you stated. Good for you, Fatty, for doing this event and raising so much awareness and money for cancer.

  48. Comment by Rocky | 06.23.2008 | 4:03 pm

The triathalon was a good day – as it turns out, it was a better day for Matt. Congratulations! Thanks, Fatty, for putting it on – it was good to be there.

On a note of concern, from the photo sequence in today’s post it looks like Botched’ six-year old is fine – images four and five indicate that she is on her way out of the drink in good but cold condition. And then Botched grabs her to “save” her. Who is saving who there?

Nice work Botched on getting her to slide. For those who were not there, the water was at the very best, painfully frigid.

  49. Comment by Miles Archer | 06.23.2008 | 4:07 pm

That bike would have been wasted on me anyway.

    Loved the pictures.

Wow, Team Fatty/Susan’s Army, you rock!

Matt, congrats on winning– very cool.

Botched: you look like a surfacing shark. You gotta work on your scary faces. My first thought was also, “run, little girl, RUN AWAY FROM THE SCARY MAN!” and then I laughed a lot.

Sounds like you all had WAY more fun than I did– out standing in a dusty, muggy, hot field shagging cones for our national RallyCross event. Suck. I got the best fake tan on my legs though, from the dirt…

Fatty, hope you and Susan get good news today!!!

  53. Comment by Aaron | 06.23.2008 | 6:12 pm

WOW! $37,500, that’s amzing! Great job Elden. Congrats to Matt for winning the Ibis. I was also one of the lucky ones. I won the Rig. Which is AWESOME!! Thanks soooo much. I ride SS bikes all the time, and it’s just my size. It will have a nice home.

Those pictures are hilarious. The look on his face, as the glasses are flying off, is priceless.

The triathalon was amazing!!! We had a great time, although my 7 year old wasn’t so sure about the biking on his little fixie (ended up doing some walking). I was excited about the brats and bread, but I have to say that everything have said about great a cook Fish is, didn’t do him justice. The food was FANTASTIC!!!

Many congrats on the fundraising. Sounds as if you had quite a day. I just have one question: who’s the guy in the first picture, the one with the orange shorts and 6 pack?

  66. Comment by Kino | 06.24.2008 | 9:04 am

Matt – I just don’t understand how you won my bike! I am sure I had the winning tickets – aleast that’s what Fatty was telling me when I bought the tickets. Oh no that was just the fanatsy world that this genuinely fat cyclist – 5′9 and 218lbs and falling (my wife however reckons that I am getting shorter faster than I am getting lighter)was occupying until you stole the bike – sorry I mean won fair and square. Good luck and enjoy it – judging from your pics you will put it to far better use than this overwieght middle aged fool.

Fatty, those pics of Botched Experiment are fantastic. They made me laugh out loud .I would dearly love to have ‘Sliding Rock’ in my back garden, then I too could inflict this sort of behaviour on my six year old duaghter who after this mornings pre-school performance most definitely deserved a soaking in a cold mountain plunge pool.

All the best to you Susan and the family

Enjoy the bike Matt. Great another blog to keep up with…when will I get to work on time again?

Fantastic job everyone on raising all the money for LAF. We should continue to get cool bikes and do a montly raffle if it’s netting out dollars like that, and no, I don’t give a rip if I win or not.

Botched, you don’t know me, but dude…that last picture…do I want to know you? ROFL!!!

  68. Comment by Rufus | 06.24.2008 | 12:58 pm

    Congrats to all!

    Fatty Nation – 37.5?!?!? Whoohoo!

Matt – hope you enjoy my husband’s bike

Fatty – you are rich, my friend, “It’s A Wonderful Life”-type rich..the kind that never goes away.

Botched Daughter – excellent evasion tactics!

Susan – so, who won the debate on Aragorn vs. Legolas ans Serenity vs. Firefly? Personally, I’d have voted for Faramir and Firefly. Rationale provided upon request.

Hope the news is good today…you’re all in our prayers!

That is awesome. I was a fan of Matt’s blog (and its fantastic name) already and I guess if I couldnt win the bike its good someone awesome did.
Just in case anyone at Ibis reads this, or in case you want proof that the bike raffling makes good marketing sense, I am actually shopping for a new road bike, and hadnt considered Ibis until the raffle. Now Ibis is on the shortlist…
