Have Some Pie

10.22.2008 | 9:34 pm

Imagine — or try to, anyway — that you were expecting news that your favorite person in the world, the person you had chosen to live your life with, was about to die. But first, in order to get that information, you had to subject your favorite person to a battery of tests.

None of them comfortable, many of them painful.

Imagine what it’s like to sit for half an hour with that person in the doctor’s office while you wait for the results of those tests to be relayed to your doctor.

That is, in fact, a precise description of my afternoon. Up to a point.

But then, imagine that the doctor walks in with a big smile and says, “The results for your brain scan show dramatic improvement.”

Those are the words he used. Dramatic improvement.

And also: The tumors in your abdomen are not growing at all.

If you want to picture yourself as myself in this scenario, you now have to picture your whole life outlook suddenly turning right-side up.

This feels much much much better than when your life turns upside down.

I stood up and started shaking the doctor’s hand, an impulse I didn’t think about and probably seemed really odd to the doctor.

I expect he didn’t mind, though. I expect oncologists get to give good news rarely enough that they welcome any reaction like this any time they can get it.

What’s Next

I can’t even describe how happy I am. Susan’s brain tumors aren’t growing. They’re staying small. Further, the swelling that surrounds the tumors has gone down, too. Dramatic improvement wasn’t hyperbole.

Don’t get me wrong; I understand that the tumors are still there, and that they’ll probably grow again. But we have more time. And it feels so good to be able to say that.

There are tactics we’ve got to work on. We’ve got to figure out the Decadron puzzle, for one thing. That stuff carries some nasty side effects, the main one being that it’s terrible for bone density, and since Susan’s got cancer in her bones, this is a real problem. So we’re going to taper off again, but this time very, very slow, and with small increments. We’ll figure it out.

I’ve been asking very frequently for your prayers and good thoughts, and you readers have delivered, overwhelmingly. Now, I wouldn’t presume to know how to divide up the pie of credit for this wonderful news we got today, but I certainly believe that you all get a big slice of it.

Thanks again and again.

Hate the Decadron, Love the Decadron. It took almost a year for me to wean off(25mg day), then reactions with other meds sent me to hospital with symptoms I’d rather not go through again.
Truly great news today! Take advantage of every victory.
    Prayers, prayers, prayers.

Ah man, so great to hear it. What a scare you had. I hope you’re ready for your own BIG slice of pie!

Thanks for sharing it – yum yum!

I was at my book club last night and two of the women told stories of people they know who had such terrible cancers but now are doing just fine – a year ago they didn’t think they’d make it past each day, now their bodies are “clear” of the cancer and life is back to normal. As they spoke, I could only think of Susan and send my positive thoughts your way. In the midst of it, it’s so hard to see the potential, hard to see your life back to normal, but you have to! There’s far too many cases of people who HAVE overcome it and WON! And this little sign is an example of that potential.

And we all believe that SUSAN will WIN! :-)

In my opinion, you make/earn your own good fortune (though for some reason bad fortune seems to be the will of the stars, gods, or whatever luck-deciding figure you believe in). Some would call it Karma, others would call it God’s grace and love. Either way, you have to earn it.

You and Susan deserve every single bit of good fortune that comes your way. I don’t know you (except the little information I obtain though neighborly blog-stalking), but you seem to be genuine, decent, caring people who have impacted others with your words and actions. You didn’t get any of the good fortune by luck, you earned it by being good people. I feel like, if the roles were reversed, you’d be doing the exact same things that all of your friends and family are doing for you.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but every time I come to this blog I cross my fingers and hope for the best (before I even read anything) because Karma has a lot of good news back-pay it owes you and I’m glad it’s finally put a (very) small down-payment on what it owes you.

    WIN Susan!

I am a sook. when i read your posts and Susan is not doing well, tears well up in my eyes. I dont cry ‘cos i’m a bloke but theyre being vigourously held back. But then i get the same emotion when i read your post today that Susan has had a “dramatic improvement”

I’ll keep fighting back the tears and you guys keep fighting the tumors.

Dramatic improvement is a phrase that is great to hear at any time, but this time it’s more than great, it’s fantastic.

Still more thoughts and prayers and karma and love coming your way.

“I stood up and started shaking the doctor’s hand, an impulse I didn’t think about and probably seemed really odd to the doctor.”

I get hugs from some of my patients after doing their ultrasounds – no, not the baby kind. I’m sure the [excessive] handshaking was not perceived as really odd. It probably even gave the doc a much-needed warm fuzzy for the rest of the day. :-)

Keep up the odd stuff. :-D
