Oh Hi There, I’m Back

05.23.2018 | 8:02 am

First off, a question: have you missed me? It’s very very important to me that I was missed.

Also, I’m really curious whether anyone checks back here anymore. I mean I do, but if you do too, why do you? Not that I’m complaining.

Next off, though, the reason I’m firing this back up. Two reasons, actually.

The main reason is: I discovered that when I’m writing for someone else’s blog, I wind up not writing. At all. Like, I’ve gone a year or more without writing a thing about bikes. So I wanted to come back.

The other reason is that I’ve started a new podcast that I think fits here beautifully. It’s the Leadville 100 Podcast, hosted by Michael Hotten and me, with weekly segments by Jonathan Lee of TrainerRoad and Rebecca Rusch, the Queen of Pain.

Frankly, it’s pretty awesome. Please give it a listen. In fact, give it a listen below, or — better yet — subscribe (and rate, and review) on Apple Podcasts.

I look forward to hearing what you think. Especially if you love it, like, a lot.

Wow! A pleasant surprise when this post appeared in my RSS-feed! Welcome back!

  5. Comment by Jacob | 05.23.2018 | 12:04 pm

    Because Feedly.

Any site that publishes content that I’d like to read on a regular basis goes there. I don’t always delete feeds after they stop publishing so if they go active again, it will tell me.

Who’s actually capable of keeping up with a dozen blogs and a dozen more web comics without an RSS reader?

  6. Comment by Chicago Nick | 05.23.2018 | 12:05 pm

    I missed you!!!

  7. Comment by Steven | 05.23.2018 | 12:22 pm

Wait, what? I thought that The Paceline with the weekly mention WAS the Leadville 100 podcast.

  8. Comment by Scott D Gilbert | 05.23.2018 | 1:09 pm

yay! Glad to have you back and we’ve missed race reports!

Welcome back! Can’t wait to see what you have to say.

  10. Comment by Ron Richings | 05.23.2018 | 1:25 pm

Much the same as Jacob, above. You were on my RSS feed list (also Feedly) and I rarely remove apparently dormant feeds. In the hope that they may return to posting sometime in the future. And you did!

  11. Comment by traildiva | 05.23.2018 | 1:49 pm

    Yay! Welcome back!

  12. Comment by Ken Kozlowski | 05.23.2018 | 1:50 pm

Glad to have you back. Had you on my RSS feed. I too missed the race reports. How about a 20-parter to fill us all in on what you’ve been doing? With cliffhangers, of course…

  13. Comment by Chris | 05.23.2018 | 1:51 pm

Awesome! Missed your race reports, and can’t wait to check out the podcast!

  14. Comment by Boston Carlos | 05.23.2018 | 1:58 pm

WELCOME BACK!!!!!!!! Did you prepare DavidH for this, or is he going to have a heart attack when he sees it?

Well, I kinda did it on a whim. But I think I like this whim. – FC

    Woot!

Indeed, through the magic that is Feedly…boom…there you are again!

Oh, if you’re watching, I guess I’m definitely back. But now I feel pressure.

  17. Comment by Papuass | 05.23.2018 | 2:18 pm

Still had you in my RSS subscriptions :)

But I did notice you moving to RKP and then not writing anything. So welcome back!

  18. Comment by Paige | 05.23.2018 | 2:22 pm

Oh my goodness, I just googled you yesterday to see if you were writing anywhere. Is that creepy or what??

  19. Comment by MattC | 05.23.2018 | 2:49 pm

HOORAY!!! Fatty’s BACK!!! Missed you FIERCELY my cycling brother!! (I just happened to glance at my blogs I follow list and SHAZAM! A new post by Fatty! Had to do a double-take to make sure the date was right!) Hope you don’t feel the need to ‘entertain’ us like you did before w/ daily/near-daily posts…even weekly/bi-weekly would be AWESOME!! You’ll bring the family back together again…we’ve been out wandering in the wastelands far too long!
Just saw Lisa’s FB link to your LT100 podcasts last night, never dreamed you’d re-open your site! Also was thinking about it…you’ve completed TWENTY LT100’s…that’s TWO THOUSAND MILES of LEADVILLE! (actually a bit more, isn’t each one like 102 miles?) That totally blows my mind! And you are in pretty rare company…only 8 people on the planet in that club! Anyway, WELCOME BACK!! And btw, where’s DavidH w/ gigantic pictures for us?? I’m SO Disappointed!

  20. Comment by Bren Murphy | 05.23.2018 | 3:01 pm

Wow! It’s true! I thought I had a dream you were coming back! lol! Awesome!
    Thank you
    Bren

  21. Comment by Ken Graham | 05.23.2018 | 3:07 pm

Welcome back, Fatty! My routine had shifted to checking RKP for new content and listening to the Paceline. Thanks to Dicky for the heads up on fc.com rebirth. :-) Oddly enough, started the Leadville podcast on this morning work commute. Happy writing and riding!

  22. Comment by Eric Nehrlich | 05.23.2018 | 3:13 pm

Like others, I followed you via Feedly and am glad you’re back on your own site – I had no interest in RKP. More funny stories of biking races and mishaps, please!

  23. Comment by Elliot | 05.23.2018 | 3:52 pm

That’s a blast from the past in my feed.

  24. Comment by Dan | 05.23.2018 | 4:13 pm

As others, you reappeared in feedly. I look forward to reading your stories again and will try the podcast. I cast podcasts to various speakers all day, the TV is rarely on. Though I am an avid cyclist, I have not found a cycling podcast that “stuck.”

  25. Comment by Rob L | 05.23.2018 | 4:18 pm

Welcome back. Accessed your old site today on a whim and was pleasantly surprised to see a new post. As info, my preference is the written blog rather than podcasts due to time constraints. I do understand this probably takes more of your time.

  38. Comment by Bad Dad | 05.23.2018 | 8:09 pm

It’s baaaaaaack. We’ll know it’s really back when we start seeing fattys weight on a regular basis. And his power. And stories of snipes.

Actually, I never want another story of snipes.

Weight and power though…maybe there’s a contest one day

  39. Comment by Leedo | 05.23.2018 | 8:43 pm

Still in my blogger reading list so, yes, I’m still stalking you. And my son just found your books on my bookshelf so there’s that. He’s a cat-2 MTB racer here in WA state. Now he wants to someday ride Leadville. I think I’m in trouble.

  40. Comment by Heidi | 05.23.2018 | 9:56 pm

Yay! I’m here because I peek at your twitter every so often. I never cleared you out of my Favorites list of websites.

  41. Comment by FatJeff | 05.23.2018 | 10:15 pm

    Hot damn tamale Charlie!

Welcome back Fatty! I knew my semi-frequent stalking…errrr…checking up on the blog, would pay off!

P.S. Finally lost enough weight to actually WEAR my Fat Cyclist Jersey, so I got that going for me.

Congrats! Meanwhile, I’ve gotten too fat to fit into mine. – FC

  42. Comment by Sara | 05.23.2018 | 11:05 pm

Just had a conversation about a week ago in our household about how much we were missing Fat Cyclist posts. There has been a huge void that will be filled once again. ::happy sigh::

  57. Comment by Mike C | 05.24.2018 | 11:19 am

He Lives!! I was hanging around RKP waiting for posts from you. Glad to see this post and will subscribe to the podcast.

    Welcome back!!

  58. Comment by Rick S | 05.24.2018 | 2:56 pm

    THANK GOD YOU ARE BACK!

I did my first metric century last year, then had a horrible summer and fall at work, got fat, and lost the will to ride.
Your blog motivated me before, I bet it does it again!

    THANK YOU!!!!!

  59. Comment by Jacob JG | 05.24.2018 | 3:27 pm

Written fatty content. Wohoo. Glad to have you back. Well that really didn’t do justice on how glad that made me.

  60. Comment by Tami Schall | 05.24.2018 | 5:06 pm

My husband started cycling 8-ish years ago for fun at the MS Best Dam Bike ride in Logan. As time progressed he got hooked and started looking for bigger better rides. He found the Rockwell (AND YOU). He has read me many of your posts. Happy, sad, funny… He’s remained an avid rider and we were sad you weren’t blogging anymore.
We just love the “real stories” and love to laugh.

I had a knee replacement in Provo Monday the 21st. We met and connected with this spectacular nurse! And realized by comparing stories that she is none other than…the Hammer!
I came looking… and here you are!

She is a dynamic woman and great nurse it was fun to meet her. It sent us back to check our your blog!

  61. Comment by wharton_crew | 05.24.2018 | 7:21 pm

Best damn thing to happen to me this week! Welcome back Fatty! Yours is the ONLY blog that I regularly follow.

  62. Comment by Peckish Cyclist | 05.24.2018 | 8:54 pm

Oh, how I’ve missed you, Fatty! I was just thinking of how I met you at our UC Davis Team Fatty fest—and how we chanted “we want pie!” at the starting line. If I’d known that was how to get you back, I’d have reminisced about the pie chant sooner… Welcome back :)

Welcome back! I’ve been checking periodically just to see if there’s anything new, since your RKP blog seems to have gone dead as well. I haven’t read your other two new posts yet, but it’s good to see you back here!

  68. Comment by FatRoxy | 05.25.2018 | 7:49 pm

Yay! So glad you’re back! I checked back today because I accidentally clicked your site name in my bookmark list and had to do a double-take (but I’ve been checking back now and then anyway with a glimmer of hope). None of my favorite cycling blogs seem to write anymore, so I’m glad to have the one that started it all for me to read again.

I just saw your tweet talking about your recent post. I’m so happy you’re back. Your blog was a highlight of my week.

I can’t wait to listen to all nine podcast episodes. Something to do on my spin bike on rainy days.

The only thing better would be a video podcast.

  85. Comment by Susan Helton | 06.6.2018 | 9:06 pm

    Well, gosh! Welcome back!

  86. Comment by Mike | 06.8.2018 | 1:06 pm

Wow, just randomly I checked back (as I do whenever I think about it) because I miss your stories and it seems like you had disappeared since the whole “transition”. And it just so happens that you put out this entry on what was my birthday, so it seems like a special little gift from the universe. Welcome back.

  87. Comment by Snowcatcher | 06.9.2018 | 9:21 pm

Yes, I do check back, obviously not often, but I do check back. Sometimes I would read old posts. Sometimes I would just wishfully think. Then I’d go over to RKP and look for you, and as you mentioned, I wouldn’t find you there.

So, HALLELUJAH!!! Welcome back! We have missed you, and I so look forward to catching up!!! You just made my cycling day!!!

  88. Comment by Brent Ruther | 06.11.2018 | 11:03 am

I am extremely happy to see your blog back and running – was very sad to see it go. I read blogs, which are becoming a thing of the past it seems, often and yours was on my must read list. Thank you.

  89. Comment by Brent Ruther | 06.11.2018 | 11:04 am

By the way, thank Bad Idea Racing for keeping your link active – that is how I happened upon the new entries! That little man deserves some credit sometimes

  90. Comment by Tes | 06.13.2018 | 8:09 am

THANK THE CYCLING GODS! You have been missed. I’ve been reading through old ride posts and realized how much I missed your blog. I happen to click on the “next” link – after what I thought was the end, and what do I find? YOU! Welcome back?!?!
