Start Getting Ready for the 3rd Annual 100 Miles of Nowhere

03.18.2010 | 6:44 am

201003180541.jpgPerhaps the third most ridiculous thing I have ever done is invent the 100 Miles of Nowhere. The second most ridiculous thing was to drink a bottle of Cholula in one sitting, and I elect at this time to not disclose the most ridiculous thing I have ever done, because it is far to embarrassing, and because it will probably make a pretty good blog entry at some point.

Anyway.

I am happy to announce that you too have the opportunity to participate in the third annual 100 Miles of Nowhere, with all profits going — once again — to Team Fatty’s LiveStrong Challenge.

What is the 100 Miles of Nowhere, you ask? Good question. Long ago, I rode 100 miles on my rollers in a single sitting, just to be bullheaded. Other people thought it sounded like something we ought to do as a group, so last year we did. Many people rode on their rollers or trainers, others rode a very small loop near their house.

The idea, basically, is to ride an infuriatingly small course for 100 miles, to fight cancer and to show you have no sense at all. People did it, and sent in awesome race reports, including one video that was so awesome I watched it five times. Watch it and tremble.

More details will be coming soon (like, on Monday), but the essentials are listed below (with the super-essential stuff conveniently bolded for, well, your convenience):

  • Registration for the event is March 22 – 28 (or ’til the event sells out), and is pre-register only.
  • As with last year, your registration makes you an official participant in the race and a guaranteed winner of whatever division you choose.
  • The schwag box you’ll receive is on the extra-awesome side of the awesome scale, and will include the Twin Six T-shirt you see above, along with good stuff from Clif, DZ Nuts, Timex, CarboRocket, Team Garmin-Transitions, Harper-Collins, Banjo Brothers, and more (I’m being coy about the “more” part ‘cuz I’m still working deals and stuff). How awesome is that? Very, very awesome.
  • Registration will be $95.00 this year.
  • This event is capped at 500 participants. This is because I’ve asked the sponsors to provide awesome schwag, and they don’t have an infinite amount to spread around. And Twin Six — who, against their better judgment will be doing fulfillment for this race again — doesn’t have the capacity to send out a zillion boxes.
  • The race is May 8. Or you can do it May 7. Or whenever, really. But for solidarity, you should do it on May 8. Unless you’ve got something important going on. In which case you should do it a different day. Have I made myself clear?
  • If you’re a local — i.e., Utah County or SLC — you should plan on doing this event with me. I haven’t gotten the details finalized, but I plan on borrowing some bike shop space and making this a group thing. It will be fun! Just kidding, it won’t be fun. But it will be less un-fun.

As always, you get to be the one who decides what your route will be. You can be very bland — like me — and just ride your rollers or trainer. Or you can ride around the block for 100 miles. Or around the high school track. Or around your cul-de-sac. Regardless, you’re sure to generate a very interesting GPS breadcrumb, as well as a strong aversion to whatever route location you choose.

I have my first TRI of the season that day, but I’m in and will do it on the 9th. Thanks for giving us some time to prepare… It will give me enough time to find just the right pillow for my saddle!

Great. Really enjoyed it last year. Looking forward to doing it again this year :)

Looking forward to all the Nowhere Reports.
On a side note – Tony Kornheiser promoted running down cyclist on his radio show on March 11. Lance tweeted about it today.
Let ESPN know that this guy is an ass.

If you don’t have a trainer can you do this on a stationary bike at your gym? Are the miles accurate on those?

  8. Comment by KyClyde | 03.18.2010 | 7:51 am

I have the perfect 100 ft diameter Cul De Sac for it this year! I’m way too adverse to my rollers after a long winter.

  9. Comment by Justin | 03.18.2010 | 7:58 am

By admission, “I’m a weather weenie” and its still to cold to ride outside. I ride 4 days/week on the trainer and grimmace at the mere mention of 100 miles of nowhere.
However, I’m not entirely sure there’s a better use for $100 and don’t think my wife and 3yr old will mind if I ride all day inside(now how will I tell them?). Maybe I’ll opt for the short course.

(Got it!! I’ll ride 400 laps around a highschool track)

Having not done this before – and really looking forward to it this year. And I’m looking forward to the sheer silliness of it too.

    Fatty,

For those of us in the UK what time will registration open? I rode last year and intend to ride everyone you ever do but know this will sell out fast. I have a best friend who has been given a couple of months at best so I’m thinking of doing it outside the hospital window as entertainment!

  15. Comment by Lana | 03.18.2010 | 8:44 am

So excited – my ride buddy from last year has a broken leg, but he might be able ro ride by the end of May, so maybe I will hold off on the Michigan branch of the event for a few weeks. Plus gives me time to get all the pies together for pie break time! A great way to get people to come and visit and ride with you while you are doing a crazy ride – free pie!

All that aside, Noodle officially passes the video duties to you all! Make Noodle proud.

May 8th and 9th is graduation weekend for Miami University (in Oxford, OH) where, despite my best efforts, I’ll be leaving this wonderful place for the ‘real world’. I really don’t want to be a part of the 4 hour epic of a ceremony in our football stadium on Saturday. I am more than happy with the smaller business school affair on Sunday. I wanted to skip the shindig on the 8th, but my mother has firmly established, I can’t because “I have nothing better to do.” Now I do! The 100 Miles of Nowhere!! I think the perfect loop for me would be around our football stadium. I’ll do some test rides to see If I can alter my robe and helmet in a way I can where my cap and gown while doing this. I am pumped. PUMPED!

  19. Comment by Adventure Monkey | 03.18.2010 | 9:02 am

So Fatty do tell, have people done this as a team? How would you suggest we do that? Enter as a team, or have everyone try to enter iindividually? That pingback above is from my blog if you have time to see what I am trying to throw together…I do realize you are an ultramegasuperstarblogger, but trying to have fun here in Kansas can be quite challenging at times. We could ride on a flat road that never changes OR do the 100 miles to nowhere race. I’d say the Kansas team has a pretty good chance of coming away with the win!

    Hey Fatty,

I’m considering participating in this as my first century and was hoping to contribute by donating a Videoconfercing server for the day. I’ve got enough bandwith and processing power to get 8-10 people going at the same time, and it’d be far more entertaining than watching TV reruns for 5 to 8 hours

  48. Comment by skippy | 03.18.2010 | 2:15 pm

    Well here goes nothing!
Giro first day is time trial in holland so lots of rollers in use, wonder if the racers will consider talleying their training distances and adding their mileage for the score? Team Radio Shack will easily pass 100mile in warming up!
Personally i will rollout the 100 but would prefer to do it on top of the body of that “kornheister clown”, maybe i will paper the ground with his “ESPN photo” and drip sweat all over them!
Will need “Dutch Authorities “approval for contributions to be accepted for “Livestrong”! Previous ad hoc fundraisers have been successful at Valkenburg, etc!

We are both fans of Fatty, so as soon as I got out here I thought this would be a perfect place to do the 100 Miles of Nowhere.

We are both looking forward to the ride. I just hope we make the registration cut-off.

Chcuk, 100 miles was almost the entire Terminator Trilogy in length for me, but for others it only took as long as 1 and a half Breaking Aways

after last years numbness of 5 + hours on the trainer i think i’ll hit up the local crit track for 160 laps. i wont do it in my neighbourhood though, the neighbours think im a bit weird alread. would hate to confirm it for them

  73. Comment by Sasha | 03.18.2010 | 11:11 pm

Allison H – I’m in Alaska – Anchorage to be specific so riding Ketchikan’s road to nowhere is out for me. I was contemplating doing a 3 mile loop in my neighborhood 28 times. However, my husband will have a cow if I donate $95 so I’m going to have to pass. :( I think I still owe $25 for the previous Fatty Challenge…is there a way to check on that? I am planning on 3 fundraising bike rides and one fundraising run so I’m having to be very strategic about where I concentrate my fundraising efforts. So I’ll have to think if it would be improper for me to unofficially participate (donating the $ to my Livestrong account). If the prize were a roundtrip ticket to Austin to ride with Fatty and the Runner and have dinner with said couple and get to hang out and take many pictures with said couple and have them autograph my Fatty jersey, I’d sign-up in a heartbeat. :) Anyhow, it will be fun to read all the fun posts!

That was the most awesome video ever! Nice job Noodle! Is it strange that it makes me want to do the ride? Yesterday I dismissed it as something I wish I could do but today I’ve decided to do it. I just might spend many of those hours cursing Fatty and Noodle.:) Now to decide on the trainer with hours of DVDs or up & down the longish driveway about 1000 times with some good audio books. Hmmmmmmm.

Are the Velodrome guys going to do the “644 Laps of Lunacy” or are they all still recovering from last year?

@pedalpink – Re raising money – I invited people on my tri team to come bike out to visit me and accepted donations in exchange for pie. People do crazy things for food. If you get a lot of foot traffic, maybe a bake sale table since you will be on the trainer? Spare Change drive?

    Fatty,
My brother and i are in i we can register before it sells out, it will be both of our first Century rides…and we will be doing them outside in a high school parking lot…and we will be doing them on mountain bikes with slicks. 100 miles in a parking lot with a brother, arguments will most likely ensue, but i still think we will have fun.

Hmm… not sure if I can do the $95, but it sure would be fun to participate. I’ll be living in temporary (and smaller) quarters during that time frame, on a cul de sac with a hill. Guess I could freak out my temporary neighbors by riding around the cul… Or I can ride up and down the main street the cul dumps into. Ha! Ha! That would be funny, it would be downhill to one stop sign, turn around and go uphill and then downhill to the stop sign on the other side, repeat. Crazy!!

Fatty! This is such an insanely good idea. I accidentally recruited a group of coworkers to do this with you, so now I guess I have to do it too.
Since we’ve all historically worked in MSIT-related roles, we have an especial hatred for Building 11. Therefore, we have proposed riding around Building 11 for 100 miles, which is especially apropos:
    – it implies that Building 11 is nowhere
    – riding repeatedly around the building will feel a bit like fittin’ the Battle of Jericho

Had my first bad fall today fatty and I thought of you — Was gearing up for a ride, one foot on the curb, the other clipped in, when I felt myself start to fall away from the curb. I couldn’t stop the fall, I was past the point of no return and my non-clipped leg took the brunt of my gear/chain setup.

So without even leaving my front lawn, I got hurt. It wasn’t even mile one. No one be fooled about the lack of inherent danger in the 100 miles to nowhere, I might venture it is more dangerous. But 30 stitches and a bad-ass scar are just one more thing to add to the kit for this event.

I’m planning on doing it for the first time this year!

I’m up for this although I don’t think I will be able to do it on May 8th. That’s the day I come back from a month of training(Army). Will be able to do it May 9th though!

Does anyone know how payment will be done for the registration? Will i need a paypal account is the major question, or can i just pay with a credit card the regular way, or even better, will money orders be accepted?

If Canadians participate, do we get the schwag box? In recognition of getting through all that ice and snow on May 8, of course.

Can’t wait to do this ride!! Yes I’m stuck on this boat, forward deployed with Snot Rocketeer, riding crappy old spinners. We’re 7 hours ahead of EST, so if we can’t get registered, something is just WRONG!!

    Hi.
Just wondering if this is an international event? Because I live in Iceland

I’m very interested in this event and I can get a trainer borrowed for this. This will be amazing. I think I will do it no matter what :)

was thinking about the whole central park loop, seeing as the lower loop will be entirely populated by tourists / strollers / horse-drawn carriages. OR setting up trainers/rollers next to Bethesda fountain? it’s like having the world come to us!

[...] I remembered it, and thought that I for sure wanted to do it in 2010. It just so happens that Fatty has recently announced that the 100 Miles of Nowhere season is upon us. Things only get better from here… The people that take part in this event come up with all [...]

had a blast last year – 75-miles on the trainer and 25 with the kid in a bike seat riding around.
Unfortunately my teaching job is eliminated next year- so I am out. Good luck to all Team Fatty.

Jeremy, where did you enter? Is there some secret button or code I’m missing?

  99. Comment by Johnny-D | 03.22.2010 | 6:37 am

You order on the Twin Six site, there is a men’s or women’s kit. I just ordered mine!!!!! This is my first year on a road bike, coming from a mountain bike background. We are ready up here in Michigan!!!!!

  100. Comment by Barry | 03.22.2010 | 7:38 am

To enter – go to the Twin Six website and click on the 100 Miles to Nowhere kit (men’s or women’s – if you can’t figure that out, I can’t help you).

    Good luck.

  101. Comment by Kyle | 03.22.2010 | 9:52 am

Ordered. I think I will go with the trainer route. Less chance of public humiliation.

  102. Comment by Lesley Jacobs | 03.22.2010 | 10:41 am

Whee! I’m IN! I’m going to borrow my neighbor’s rollers and if I can get the hang of them I’ll ride out front of my house and chat up all the dogwalkers during the day. Maybe my neighbors will join me!

  103. Comment by Kit | 03.22.2010 | 10:59 am

Im in! .4 miles around the block route…

  104. Comment by Kamala | 03.22.2010 | 11:07 am

I’m in for 200 miles baby! Laps around Greenlake, Seattle on May 8 with my STP team. May 9 on a trainer at Greenlake handing out Livestrong bracelets.

  105. Comment by Barry | 03.22.2010 | 11:07 am

So should be the self-imposed max distance of any loop that will be repeated? .5 miles x 200 laps, 1 mile x 100 laps, 4 miles x 25 laps, 5 miles x 20 laps?

  106. Comment by Stuart T | 03.22.2010 | 11:10 am

Excellent – I’m in too. Rollers or a 2 mile loop round my village? Perhaps I’ll let the weather decide for me…..

    All the best.

  107. Comment by BrewCityChris | 03.22.2010 | 11:25 am

I’m in for a 1.5 mile loop 67 times around my neighborhood. I like the Livestrong bracelet idea! Good Luck to all.

  108. Comment by Betsy | 03.22.2010 | 12:20 pm

Okay, I’m in too. Going to borrow a friends trainer, as I don’t have one of my own. Can’t believe I’m doing this, but excited.

For those who don’t know how to sign up. To to the Twin Six site, click on “News” and that is where you can order your kit.
    Peace out.

  109. Comment by Dave | 03.23.2010 | 9:30 pm

Missed the sign up but I’m still doing it. My mother is an ovarian cancer survivor and I’ve got the perfect course planned – a one-tenth mile circuit around the square at my parents’ senior apartment complex (below). A nice, round 1,000 laps where all the tenants can watch from their apartments or at the “rest stop” in the gazebo in the center of the square. One question: Where should I pass my “entry fee” and any additional funds raised, to you or Team Fatty’s Livestrong Challenge?

Damn – I wish I would have not missed this again. I would have done 100 miles at the track. 2011 I guess…maybe I should just commandeer the track and do it anyway.
