Weigh-in Monday, Or How I Will Lose 5 Pounds in 4 Days

12.20.2010 | 10:17 am

A Note from Fatty: An all-caps THANK YOU to everyone who has participated in the contest to win a tour of Italy or France with Andy Hampsten by helping Andreas Knickman in his fight against bone cancer. So far, we have raised $11,300. That is awesome.

There are still three days to enter the contest and possibly win the perfect storm of cycling, eating, and hanging out with a Grand Tour champion. So, click here to go to Paypal and donate:

Another Note from Fatty: I actually got an email last night from Deb, Andreas Knickman’s mom. Here’s what she said to us.

All I can say is wow, and thank you.

We’re stunned by the support our cycling community has extended… and hey, I think we’d all love a tour of Italy with Andy!!! Aside from what you guys are doing for Andreas, what a great idea to have this little contest! Gratitude doesn’t quite say enough about how this makes us feel.

So I’m actually writing from the hospital for an unexpected visit, and my poor guy is pretty down. He was supposed to have a sleepover with his best friends tonight, and he’s pretty shut down… so actually you could do something. He loves the CaringBridge updates this year– we can tell they help him, and he reads every day. He won’t get out of here til at earliest mid-Monday, so if you or any buddies want to send him a note, I’d be immensely grateful! Funny or stories are always good… Kid is living on air and love this weekend…

This seems like a request that was made for the super powers Team Fatty has. Please join me in heading over to Andreas’ guestbook on CaringBridge and dropping off a note of support. Thanks.

Oh My Goodness, We Have EVEN MORE PRIZES For the 10-Pounds-By-Christmas Weigh-in

I am starting to find it hard to believe, but I have more prizes to

Today’s Weigh-In

weighed myself today, and am happy to report that . . . I am a pound heavier than last week. Yep, I gained a pound over the weekend. For the record: 168.0 pounds.

I am so proud.

What does this mean? It means that, with three days to go (final weigh in is on Thursday), I am pretty much five pounds away from my ten pounds by December 23 goal.

So I am considering my options.

  • Give up. I could claim a moral victory and simply not worry about losing the final ten pounds. The “moral victory” part comes from the fact that to lose any weight at all during this time of year is quite a feat. I could claim that trying to lose ten pounds in that period of time simply wasn’t realistic, considering that there are bags of Kit Kats, Reese’s, Twix, and Nestle’s Crunch around, and that every single one of these is my absolute favorite candy bar of all time. Yes, I know it’s not possible for all of them to be my very favorite, but it’s still true.
  • Starve. Five pounds in three days is totally possible if I live on grapefruit and water. And the occasional splurge on celery, when I really want to treat myself. This is also known as the “really grouchy Fatty” option.
  • Caffeinate. I have found that if I take enough caffeine I will lose weight, quickly and effectively. Albeit totally temporarily (i.e., I know it’s totally due to the diuretic effect). As long as I don’t mind being really jittery and not being able to sleep. Oh, and there’s the headache, too.
  • Dehydrate. Wednesday night, ride without a water bottle. Don’t rehydrate afterward. That’s two pounds, right there.
  • Procrastinate. Originally, I planned my Thursday weigh in for the morning. Now I’m thinking I’ll give myself the rest of the day to lose a little bit more, through the medium of eating very little, drinking even less, and exercising myself silly, with an eye toward dehydration.

Will I hit my goal? I think I will. And then will bounce right back by Christmas afternoon.

So how are the rest of you doing? Remember to post:

1. Your starting weight
2. Your current weight
3. Amount lost so far
4. Your ingenious plan for how you’ll lose those final pounds by Thursday

We’re on the home stretch (although the home stretch is longer for some of us than others). Good luck!

As a former lightweight rower (and I stress FORMER lightweight) who always had to suck down the last couple lbs, I have the following suggestions for you:
    1) Get up in the morning and do the usual washroom ritual
    2) Layer up (including covering your head), and do an hour sweat ride on the bike. (do not intake any fluids)
    3) Do the washroom ritual again.
    4) Strip down and towel off completely. (every little droplet gets sponged off)
    5) Jump on the scale -if necessary, shift your weight around until hit the “sweet spot” on your scale. (hint:leaning forward usually helps)
You won’t permanently lose the weight, but it will help you to hit your number.
    Good luck!

@VeloPastor, here’s what the original contest posting said:

“Out of everyone who successfully loses at least 10 pounds by December 23, I’ll choose random winners for each of the prizes listed above.”

A 1.5 gain from last week. I increased my exercise, but couldn’t leave the Christmas goodies alone. I don’t think I’m going to make it. Cutting off a limp or two is an option as is liposuction, but I think I’ll just be satisfied knowing my overall weight has not increased. Hmm. I don’t think I’ll make it. I only maintained in the past week (quite remarkable, actually, with potlucks and buffet brunches).

As I’ve never really restricted myself or counted calories before (I always prefer exercising to dieting), I’m quite proud that I’ve managed to record everything I’ve eaten in the past 3 weeks and done my best to keep my calorie intake between 1500 and 2000 calories, along with exercising. I had a bad week where I didn’t find the time to exercise, and I think that’s what’s going to do me in.

I’m still going to be trying though. Three pounds in three days? It’s going to be tough. More exercise is what I’ll need.

Fatty, don’t give up! I survived most of the Christmas parties (only 1 more to go!) without too much problem (though I had non-pleasant thoughts of you everytime I saw a sugary, tasty treat and turned it down – it’s nice to blame someone else). Will be glad to eat and enjoy the holiday on thursday (and not be so grumpy)!

Don’t have much of plan except stay on chicken salad dinners, work out every day at the gym (yuck!). I am also supposed to make the holiday cookies for all the relatives staying at our house but I will wait until Thursday night to avoid further temptation.

I don’t know what my problem was this week. I gained almost everything back. No way I am going to make it but I will keep trying. Even if I make the weight a few weeks after the deadline I will still be the lightest I have been in 10 years.

Last week: 7 hrs on the trainer (too icy and too much snow on the roads, but not bored to death thanks to Belgian tv airing 2 cyclocrosses and lots of soccer games this week).

Yes, I did it. Now it’s a matter of hanging in there till the 23rd. So no more than one Christmass Leffe beer a day. And 3 more nights on the trainer…

I made it, can we end it now so I can eat the cookies I baked this weekend? Please. Pretty please. I’ll send you some cookies.

Actually, I’m sure I’ll be able to keep it off now the parties and baking is over and I hope to go lower. I just will tone down the severe cut in calories so I won’t be quite as cranky as I have been some days.

My goal is to keep on a steady 8-10 pound a month loss average so that before too long I can weigh under 200 for the first time since historians quit keeping records on stone tablets.

I threw my back out on 12/12 and that was the end of my competition. Without being able to exercise (let alone walk pain-free), I cannot lose weight properly.

I will continue to lose weight on into the new year after my back has healed up. I’m just disappointed I couldn’t continue on with the competition.

Ingenious plan for how you’ll lose those final pounds by Thursday:I think I am good. In last week’s 1 day postponement I dropped 2.4 lbs over the 24 hrs. But in case I don’t, I plan to vehemently proclaim I lost 10 lbs and all my success is due to my efforts, not the meat and gravy I have been eating. Not looking good for me. My plan is to add in some more higher intensity exercise (I’ve been slack the last couple of weeks), eat more of my calories from fruits and veggies and drink more water. And hope for the best.

Still, this contest has been a very positive thing for me – it has gotten me focused back on my diet and motivated to do something about the extra weight. I’ve just had zero motivation since the kidlet was born. So regardless of the outcome, I will consider this effort a success!

You know, I really thought I was going to be out of the competition by now, since we went on vacation and spent the weekend in a bed & breakfast. The host enjoyed telling us all the ingredient that went into his truly decadent cooking and kept placing bowls of chocolates and fresh baked brownies around. o.O I was doomed. But I came home to discover I’d still managed to lose half a lb… so for the remaining 1.8 lbs I’m going for the temporary weight loss. I put on 2.4 lbs since last week’s weigh-in. I’m with Eldon. I’m not sure if I want to throw in the towel or give it one last big effort – and put it all back on Christmas Day.

The only way I may make it (losing 6.2 lbs in three days) is to run on the treadmill, ride on the trainer, and starve myself. I’m not too sure that sounds like fun.

Good luck to everyone else, though.

Starting weight: Approximately that of a NFL Lineman
    Current Weight: -12 pounds
Lost weight: Have lost 12 and maybe as much as 14 pounds. We have a non-digital scale that weighs less when you first step on. To be conservative, I am going with the 12 pounds but it may actually be more.

Would like to be celebrating but I screwed my back up but good yesterday and now I am extremely cranky.

Hopefully the fact that I can barely move will mean I can’t get to any treats or calorie-laden foods in the next few days and I’ll end up with like a 15 pound loss.

    I have an issue though.
My scale says I weigh 158 pounds. My scale says that me and a particular Christmas package weigh 175 pounds. My scale says that package weighs 15, not the 17 pounds suggested by the differential. FedEx’s scale says the package weighs 21 pounds. Thus, I have serious doubts as to the accuracy of my scale, and will have to disqualify myself. However, there is now noticeably less fat overhanging my long underwear, which is a huge moral victory. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck!

    loss of 9 lbs.

Plan more of the same: (daily) 40 min interval on the trainer followed by free weights. 6 small meals a day, eating lean meats, protein shakes, brown rice, steel cut oats. (the first two weeks of this were just awful).

The plan was to do the Edgar Cayce Apple Fast if things didn’t look good: 3 days of just organic apples, lots of warm water, then a quarter cup of olive oil at the end to, well, wash it all out.

My plan to lose the last one lb is … beg my wife. She had an open house this weekend, where I remained steadfast in my resolve; avoiding choc chip cookies, brownies, cakes while munching on carrotts and celery. But that was easy. Now there are massive quantities of yummy desserts (leftover) in the fridge and freezers. Pleeeassssss Denise … throw them out! I cannot afford to get weak and BINGE !! I’m fairly certain she’s ready to negotiate some expensive gift in exchange for tossing the cookies.

    1. Your starting weight: 158
    2. Your current weight: 153
    3. Amount lost so far: 5 lbs
    4. Your ingenious plan for how you’ll lose those final pounds by Thursday: I will not sample any of the holiday baked goods I have to make this afternoon and give all my food away to the homeless and I will restock & eat nothing but lean chicken breasts, raw veggies, and olive oil. Keeping strictly to 1200 calories/day. I will also drink at least 2 gallons of water per day for the next two days, then drink nothing else ’til the final weigh in and do hot yoga daily. I will take a very hot shower before final weigh in. I will stock up on pedialyte to rehydrate after final weigh in. :D
Or, possibly, I just won’t bother to lose 5 lbs in the next 4 days though the plan should work (just ask a wrestler) it wouldn’t be good for me and probably isn’t worth the effort for what it is.

    Started 102.6 kg (225.7pounds)

Had a religious event and instead of drinking water every glass seemed to be filled with wine.

Net result was no weight loss this week, so still at 99.5kg (218.9 pounds)

    6.8 down, 3.2 to go … that’s do-able, even if only temporarily.

    4. Continue to literally burn more calories exercising than I consume on a daily basis so I don’t screw this up – so far that seems to be doing the trick. I think technically this may qualify as starving myself, albeit slowly, but hey, hard to argue with results. Went through a few rough days of feeling pretty bad but that seems to have subsided a bit now – I’ve got this theory that now that I’m living off of my fat all of the toxic stuff I’ve been eating and drinking for the past, oh five years or more, is coming back to haunt me now that it’s being released to my body to live off of!

Over the past couple of years I’ve dropped from 313 to 148 and since April took up cycling again at age 60 and have a new outlook on life. Thanks for allowing me to help with the young cancer patient. It’s a great feeling to be a part of something so worthy. Many have helped me on my trek to a healthy life, including beating cancer. The five bullet points at the top were very encouraging since I basically considered them all and thought some might be cheating. Also I recognize the reasoning as something a former wrestler would come up with to make weight – (I may have read that you used to wrestle. Even if you didn’t, that’s completely the mindset. Travel matches with weigh-ins at home, forget about it.)

The plan: Fiber and cross-country skiing.

I just found these 2 bars: Corazonas Oatmeal Squares, and gnu Foods flavor & fiber – 5g fiber, 190 calories, and 12g fiber and 130 calories, respectively. Both all natural, of course. They make it a bit easier to restrict the eating. This challenge may have a strange effect on my thinking, but I actually like the way they taste.

I’m in Vermont this week so it’s cross-country skiing and good walks with the dogs. If Wednesday or Thursday look a little tight, I’ll find a gym and sweat it out on the indoor bike.

I chose to try the bullet 3 approach last week and ate close to normal and came in just under 3 lbs. The sleep still isn’t right but it’s only a few more days :-). And, since I’m home all week the normal eating times will help as will soup and salads for my meals to get there. Packing all the Christmas baking and candy in cellophane bags and giving them away removes that temptation. And I got the NordicTrack out of the mothballs, so perhaps three hours a day skiing on that and a diet of water and lettuce until Christmas Eve?

I’d like to get to 10 by Thursday, but I will be happy with sticking to this new way to eating, portions, walking a little, and maintaining a slow downward trend.

Ugghhh…actually UP one pound from last week! I was below ten pounds…now going wrong way. Became ill with really bad sinues (darn recirculated recycled office air). I know I must have at least three pounds of phlegm to shed starting tonight on the trainer, then run tomorrow at lunch, then swim, and repeat until final weigh-in!

    Thanks again “non-fat” Fatty!

With 300+ entries today & only a few days to go I would like to help you…Fatty, that is. I heard or read somewhere about a trick you can play on ‘your’ body to lose weight called “cold immerison”. The trick is to fill a bathtub with ice water and see how long you can take the heat…er cold. Your body will find those hard to reach fat cells and steal their energy and poof several less fat cells. Repeat as needed. Let me know if this still works, I repeated too often and seem to be missing some fat cells between the ears. KNOW YOUR LIMIT, ah! what the heck, you need to push the limit.

I’m still doing good and feeling great! I was down to 175.6 last June, which was the lowest I have weighed in about 25 years. Various health issues caused my weight to climb back up to 199 by the middle of September. It was a fantastic feeling to surpass last summers low this week! My real goal is to lose another 4.4 pounds and get my BMI down to the “desirable” level and then on to something between 160 and 155. I started at 215 (or there abouts). It’s been a long haul! 2. 183
    3. 6 or 7 lbs.
    4. I personally am not sure. I’ve discovered I’m a terrible dieter and once my wife starts making her famous cream cheese sugar cookies all bets will be off…..I’ll have to hide the cream cheese until Friday night.

As for a legit plan, I’ll probably run myself silly and sit on the trainer until I fall off or I wear through my chamois. Will it count if I pass out from dehydration? If I lose my last 3-4lbs. it WILL!!! I need those wheels or a heart rate monitor…or moldly old bottle!!!

Still working toward final weigh in in two days. Three pounds? Nothing to it (I hope) – but as Fatty points out, wieght lost over a short time is usually by drastic measures, and pounds lost that way usually come back almost as quickly as they were shed. nevertheless, 3 pounds and counting down.

Made great progress, but now it has slowed considerably. There is no way I can lose four more pounds. If I can get to 7, that would be 5 percent of my body weight, which is still pretty darn good. And I would be well over 150 if not for this contest, so thank you. I REALLY want some of those prizes though, so I am thinking of cutting off a leg, that would get me well under 138. I would love the Trek or the snowshoes, but I guess I’d really need two legs for those, wouldn’t I? But I could still admire the shirts signed by Levi Leipheimer; you dont need two legs to do that, right?

  523. Comment by Andrew | 12.23.2010 | 8:58 am

    Start: 220lbs
    Today: 209.5lbs
    Total lost: 10.5lbs

    Phew.

My plan was pretty simple. For meals, I ate the same stuff I usually do, just watched the portion sizes and I cut out snacks. This was hard, but apparently I snack way too much. For exercise, I started out doing the hundred pushup challenge, but in week 2 family stuff, Christmas stuff etc. all caught up with me. By the time I’d get the kids in bed and get what I needed to done for the day, I’d wind up sacking out on the couch almost immediately. I will pick it back up after Christmas though. So my level of exercise remained pathetically low – really just my 3.5 miles (round trip) per day to and from the train station.

Like I said, apparently I snack way too much if just cutting out snacks makes that big of a difference.

Thanks for the motivation to get going. I plan to keep it up. If I could get down to ~190 I’d be close enough to my fighting weight from my racing days to make me happy.

So…yeah, didn’t quite make it. I blame it on that last week, too many Christmassy snacks floating around at work. It was a great kickstart though! I had planned on losing 40lbs this year and I think that looking at the larger number kept me from focusing on the small gains (or losses). Next year’s goal will be 6-8lbs/month till I hit my target weight.
